Frances Wilson

La Grande

1913-2003

Frances Ann Elizabeth Daniels Wilson, 90, of La Grande died Oct. 30 at a care center. A memorial service will be held in the spring. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wilson was born March 24, 1913, to William Arthur and Caroline Gellerman Daniels in Raton, N.M. She grew up in La Grande, Summerville and various logging camps, and graduated from Eastern Oregon College of Education. She taught elementary school and worked as a reading specialist in La Grande, Vale and Prairie City, and in one room schools, including Upper Liberty and Grouse, also known as Fairview. She married Howard "Pink" Wilson in Weiser, Idaho. She helped raise two nieces and took care of her mother in her old age. She enjoyed hunting, making mincemeat from venison, attending social events at the Elks Lodge and traveling.

Survivors include a sister, Ruth Cronin of Pasco, Wash.; two nieces, Sydney Aleson Macfarlane of Brightwood and Margaret Cronin Moore of Pasco; a nephew, Mark Cromwell of Portland, and other relatives. Her husband, two sisters, Ethel Cromwell and Georgia Powell, and a niece, Billie Jeanne Cronin, all died earlier.

Memorials may be made to any organization dealing with abandoned animals.

Kelton Clifton

La Grande

1961-2002

Kelton Wayne Clifton, 42, of La Grande died Nov. 2 at Grande Ronde Hospital of natural causes. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Damascus Road Ministries, 905 C Ave., with Pastor Kemit Knight officiating. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Clifton was born June 19, 1961, to Kelton F. and LaRue Stanley Clifton in Center, Texas. He moved to La Grande about eight years ago. He was a truck driver and enjoyed eating out, going to movies and flea markets, and spending time with his daughter.

Survivors include his companion, Marta Harvill, and his daughter, Alissa Harvill, both of La Grande; two brothers, James Clifton of Center, and TaFari Spencer of La Grande; his mother, LaRue Spencer of La Grande; a grandmother, Susan Clifton of Center, and other relatives.

Minnie E. Leavitt

La Grande

1914-2003

Minnie E. Dunn Leavitt, a longtime resident of La Grande, died Nov. 1 at her home. She was 89.

A celebration of life will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Union County Senior Center.

Mrs. Leavitt was born July 5, 1914, in Edgar, Neb., to Thomas G. and Edna M Bishop Simmons. As a young girl she moved with her family to the Ozarks, and later settled in Canon City, Colo., where she graduated from school.

She married Lee Dunn on Oct. 13, 1931 in Colorado Springs. She worked for a time as a waitress in Canon City and Leadville, Colo., before the family moved to Vancouver, Wash., and later to Salem. She came to La Grande in l949 from Salem. While here, she had owned and operated the Cupboard Cafe from 1949 until 1974. Mr. Dunn died in 1972.

On June 28, 1974, she married T.G. Leavitt in Elko, Nev. The couple continued to reside in La Grande. Mr. Leavitt died in l993.

Mrs. Leavitt enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking, playing cards and spending time with her family. She helped start senior meals programs locally as well as in Union, North Powder and Wallowa and Baker counties.

She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary 259, the La Grande Methodist Church, the Royal Neighbors, the Golden Eagles Card Club, the 12 Aces Card Club, the AARP, Senior Inc. and the election board. She was also instrumental in helping raise the initial fund to build the current senior center. She had been a past president of the Soroptimist club.

Survivors include three children and their spouses, Robert and Jane Dunn of Tillamook, Gracie and Walter Tarter of Union and Jeanne and Jim Stewart of Bull Shoals, Ark.; two stepchildren and their spouses, Una Mae and Jack Harman of The Dalles, Kenneth and Sharon Leavitt of La Grande; step-daughters in law, Verda Leavitt of Pendleton and Connie Leavitt. of Salem; 22 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren.

A sister and two step-sons died earlier.

Roger Osborne

Formerly of Haines

1921-2003

Roger Osborne, 82, of Midwest City, Okla., and formerly of Haines died Oct. 28 in Boise after an automobile accident in Ontario Oct. 24 that also killed his wife, Billie Osborne, 79, and his daughter, Beverly Stanley, 57, that day.

Services for Roger and Billie Osborne were in St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City Nov. 1 with burial at Arlington Memory Gardens. Heren-Wood Funeral Home in Ontario was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Osborne was born and raised at Fisher Springs in the Muddy Creek area of Haines, and married Billie Gaston.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Mike Boydstun; son-in-law, Jim Stanley; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Bonita Fellers and Kathleen Honigbaum; a sister-in-law, Ruth Osborne; a nephew, Ron Osborne of Baker City and two nieces, Pam Hardwick of La Grande and Gloria Kleck of Union. Two brothers, Nigel and Merton Osborne, died earlier.

‘Judy’ Chadwick

Formerly of La Grande

1920-2003

Gertrude Irene "Judy" Chadwick, 83, of Gladstone and formerly of La Grande, died Nov. 3 at her home. A memorial service took place today at Willamette National Cemetery.

Mrs. Chadwick was born May 19, 1920, to George and Ella Hagey in Starkey. She graduated from La Grande High School in 1938 and on Feb. 18, 1942, married George Chadwick. She was a homemaker and lived 67 years in La Grande. The couple moved to the Portland area 15 years ago to be near family, living first in Milwaukie,

then Clackamas and finally Gladstone.

Survivors include her husband of Gladstone; children and their spouses, Mike Chadwick, Steve and Delia Chadwick, Mark and Michelle Chadwick, Tony and Jani Chadwick, Leslie and Walter Blackman and Melinda Chadwick; 22 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Wayne Gentry

Formerly of La Grande

1928-2003

Wayne L. Gentry, 75, of Grand Junction, Colo., and formerly of La Grande died Nov. 3 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. Burial will be in the Orchard Mesa Cemetery in Grand Junction. Callahan-Edfast Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gentry was born Oct. 13, 1928, to Edgar and Trudy Gentry in Gatesville, Texas. He graduated from high school in Westbrook, Texas, and went to work as a welder for El Paso Natural Gas Company. By the time he retired in 1983 he was the chief inspector for the Northwest Pipeline. In 1949 he married Mary Joyce Lake in Kermit, N.M., and for the first six years of their marriage they lived in an Airstream trailer as part of a caravan along pipeline construction sites in 35 towns. They lived in La Grande for 14 years, where they were members of the First Baptist Church. After a final retirement in 1990, he served as a consultant for various pipeline projects. In 1991 the couple moved to Grand Junction to be closer to family.

He was known as a hard worker. He enjoyed the outdoors, working on projects, fishing and watching his grandchildren play sports. He was a member of the Gideons, and was a supporter of causes close to his heart. His faith in God was a driving force in his life, his parenting and his relationships.

Survivors include his wife of Grand Junction; children and their spouses, Sherry and Jeff Nakano of Grand Junction, Paula and Bobbie Laskie of Jemez Springs, N.M., and Jody Gentry of Colorado Springs, Colo.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Archie Gentry, of Lubbock, Texas.

Lee Follett

Formerly of Elgin

1913-2003

Lee Thomas Follett, 90, of Richland, Wash., and formerly of Elgin, died Nov. 6 at Kadlec Medical Center in Richland. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at the LDS Church in Elgin. Family visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the church before the service. Vault interment will follow at Elgin Cemetery.

Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Follett was born July 21, 1913, to Warren King and Hanna Annecora Batty Follett in Elgin. On Dec. 28, 1935, he married Hazel Grace McClune, and after a divorce he married Ethel Coles on Jan 21, 1956. She died earlier. He lived his entire life in the Grande Ronde Valley until the past year when he moved to Richland to be near family. He worked for over 31 years for the Oregon State Highway Division, and retired in 1975.

He was a member of the La Grande Eagles Lodge, and a charter member and past president of the Elgin Stampeders. His retirement years were spent in the mountains camping, hunting, riding his horses and snowmobiling.

Survivors include his companion, Doris Myers-Hiberd; children and their spouses, La Roy and Dana Follett of Pendleton, Linda and Ira Lively of West Richland Wash.; stepsons and their spouses, Norvin and Eleanor Coles of Cove, and Willard and Ruth Coles of La Pine; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Seth Follett, of Bremerton Wash.

Warren Voss

Joseph

1920-2003

Warren B. Voss, 83, of Joseph died Nov. 5 at the Veterans Hospital in Walla Walla. Services took place Nov. 7, with burial in the Prairie Creek Cemetery in Joseph.

Mr. Voss was born Aug. 18, 1920, to Charles Siegel and Anna Amanda Hanson Voss in Faulkton, S.D. He graduated from high school in Stevensville, Mont., and married Anna Marguerite Huffstetter on June 9, 1941, in Caldwell, Idaho. He served in the Army during World War II as a rifle sharpshooter in the 383rd Infantry Division, and received the Purple Heart, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Asiatic-Pacific Service medal.

The couple moved to a farm on Upper Prairie Creek in Wallowa County in 1948. After his wife’s death in 1980 he married Ethel Harshfield on Jan. 8, 1982.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Dwayne and Carol Voss of Joseph, Richard Voss of Beavercreek; three brothers and two sisters; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A son, Dennis, two brothers and a sister all died earlier.

Florence Brennan of Joseph died Friday at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Katherine’s Catholic Church in Enterprise. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. with burial at Prairie Creek Cemetery. Memorials may be made to any charity in care of Bollman Funeral Home.
