LA GRANDE — Police arrested a La Grande man in connection with arson at a Union County government building.
Police took Nathan Osterloh, 39, into custody Friday, April 18, for first-degree arson, first-degree criminal mischief, second-degree disorderly conduct, reckless burning and recklessly endangering another person, according to a press release from La Grande Police Lt. Jason Hays. Police also arrested Osterloh on warrants for probation violations.
Emergency services shortly before 5 p.m. on April 1 responded to 1007 Fourth St. for a fire, according to police. The building houses the Union County District Attorney’s Office, Union County Parole and Probation and Union County Juvenile Department, as well as other agency personnel.
“Thanks to the quick response of emergency personnel, the fire was extinguished without injuries,” according to Hays.
During the course of two weeks, investigators with the La Grande police and fire departments spoke with witnesses, collected physical evidence and reviewed surveillance video.
Hays said the investigation determined the fire was set intentionally and identified Osterloh as the suspect.
The La Grande Police Department, Union County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police on April 18 responded to a domestic violence call on the 2000 block of Adams Avenue involving Osterloh and his girlfriend, according to the press release. The pair had argued and Osterloh hid in the house before police arrived.
Law enforcement found Osterloh hiding in the attic and arrested him.
“The cooperation between local and state agencies was critical in safely locating and arresting Osterloh,” according to Hays.
No additional information on the arrest was available within Oregon public records as of 4 p.m. on April 22.
