Karlyn Sue Burgess, 43, of Enterprise died Dec. 10 at her home after a long illness. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 14 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Elgin with a reception following at the Elgin Community Center. Burial will be at the Elgin Cemetery.

Mrs. Burgess was born March 24, 1961, to Ken and Betty Witty Adams in La Grande. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1979 and graduated from the La Grande College of Business in 1981. In June 1993 she married Scott Burgess. The couple lived in various places in the Pacific Northwest where she sold real estate. She was currently employed by Daggett and Associates GMAC Real Estate.

She enjoyed riding her paint horse Cheeko, camping, boating and going to yard sales and a good auction. Her love of life and laughter brought energy to everyone she knew.

Survivors include her husband of Enterprise; children and their spouses, Kyle Stookey of Enterprise, Kristin and Michael Cardoza and Dustin and Heather Burgess, all of La Grande; one grandchild; her parents of La Grande; siblings and their spouses, Kenna Jean and Mike Jordan, and Melynda and Dennis Bean, all of Lewiston, Idaho, and Larry Adams and Joan Stanley of Elgin; and other relatives.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise.

Virginia Green

Formerly of Cove

1923-2004

Virginia Mae Green, 81, of Christmas Valley and formerly of Cove died Friday, Dec. 10. Graveside services are 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14 at Cove Cemetary. Autumn Funeral in Bend is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Green was born Aug. 16, 1923, to Ira James and Maggie VanVranken Green in Commerce, Okla. She moved to Oregon in 1952 and lived in Cove until 1987 when she moved, first to Madras and then to Christmas Valley. She was a member of the Pioneer Church of God in La Grande and the Baptist Church in Cove. She enjoyed collecting Barbie dolls and going for rides in a car.

Survivors include a sister, Faith Hope Green of Christmas Valley. Two sisters died earlier.

Shirley Brown

La Grande

Shirley Mae Brown, 83, of La Grande died Dec. 9. Graveside services were held at this morning, Dec. 14, at the Cove Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Brown was born May 10, 1921, in Provo, Utah, the youngest child of Harriet and Edward Hunter. On July 4, 1944, she married Arthur Max Brown and worked as a telephone operator while he served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, the couple had four children and the family lived in Colorado and Idaho. Later in life, Mrs. Brown lived in Portland and finally moved to the La Grande area in 1995.

She enjoyed visiting the beach, gardening, hand sewing and spending time with her family, all of whom loved her very much. Mrs. Brown attended Cove Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Arthur Craig and Dottie Brown, of Erie, Penn.; Kathie and Brent Bates of Vancouver, Wash.; Lyn and Tony Blake of Logan, Utah; Max and Mark MacDonald of La Grande, a brother, William Hunter of Las Vegas; 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband Arthur in 1982.

Thora Cornwell

Thora Jean Cornwell, 78, of Joseph died Dec. 12 at a care center. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Friday Dec. 17 at Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise. A private burial will be at Prairie Creek Cemetery, Joseph.

Mrs. Cornwell was born Dec. 6, 1926, to Oliver and Caroline Reiten Castle in St. Paul, Minn. She married Jack Cornwell and they were married for 41 years ago. The couple lived in Vancouver, Wash., where she worked in a school cafeteria. They moved to Wallowa County about 20 years a go. She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing and traveling with her husband.

Survivors include her husband of Wallowa Lake; children, Ted Hisel of Vancouver, Wash., Joyce Schultz of White Salmon, Wash., and Jody Ogden of Colton; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Randy Petersen

La Grande

Randall James Petersen, 41, of La Grande died Dec. 11 at home from natural causes. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Friday Dec. 17 at the United Methodist Church. Private interment will be held at the Island City Cemetery.

Randy was born April 5, 1963, the son of James and Shirley Fulkerson Petersen in Billings, Mont. The family moved to La Grande in 1967. Randy graduated from La Grande High School in 1981. He then moved to Billings and worked at Village Shoes for a few years before moving to Seattle, where he worked in the shoe department at Nordstrom’s.

In 1986 he returned to La Grande to attend Eastern Oregon University. While at EOU he worked for Student Activities, 10 Depot Street, Fitzgerald Flowers and was student body president. He graduated in 1991 with a degree in general studies with an emphasis in economics.

After graduation he worked as a financial consultant for Hermann Financial Service. He then went to work at EOU for Chartwell’s Catering.

On July 25, 1998, he married Vivian Tucker in La Grande. He went to work for Sysco Food Services in August 1998 as a salesperson. He primarily serviced Wallowa County and in his first year on the job was rookie of the year. Over the years, he earned many awards, including a trip to Mexico, for being a top salesman.

Randy enjoyed skiing, camping, traveling and loved doing things with his family. He was a very likable, people-person and loved to buy cars, family members said.

Survivors include his mother, Shirley Petersen, sisters Joni Petersen-Simonis and Kris Petersen, brother Steve Simonis, former wife Vivian Petersen, all of La Grande; grandmother, Elizabeth Petersen Iwen of Billings; and several other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Petersen; grandfather, Earle Petersen; grandparents Pearl and Grover Fulkerson; uncles Gene and Clint Fulkerson; and aunts, Marge Robke and Pam Thomas.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the Randy Petersen Memorial Fund in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande 97850.

John Wesley Carper, 49, of Promise died Dec. 10. A celebration of life and potluck will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the IOOF hall in Wallowa.

Mr. Carper was born March 8, 1955, to John Edgar and Linda Juhola Carper in La Grande. He graduated from high school in Alsea where he was a member of the state champion football team. He had a ranch in Wallowa County and worked at Rogge’s Mill, where he received awards as a lumber grader. He enjoyed hunting, gathering mushrooms and rocks, and loved the history of the Promise area.

Survivors include siblings, Elaine Wright, Alan Crawford and Robert Huotari. His parents and a brother, Russell Crawford, died earlier.

Mary Ann Russell

Formerly of Union

1951-2004

Mary Ann Russell, 53, of Riddle and formerly of Union died Dec. 10 in Roseburg after an extended illness. Fronings’ Mountain View Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A private family service was held.

Mrs. Russell was born Feb. 25, 1951, to John Fletcher and Margaret Virginia Smith Denny in Medford. After her father’s death she lived with her grandmother and then her aunt, and graduated from Union High School in 1969. She married James Ray Russell in Oct. 1969.

Survivors include her children, James Wayne Russell and Paula Russell; a sister, M. Carole Oelrich of Riddle; and her aunt, Rena Cox of Union.

Alva Smart

Alva A. Smart, 94, of La Grande died Dec. 11 at a local care center. Viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in La Grande with Pastor Tim Gray officiating. A private burial will be at Grandview Cemetery.

Mr. Smart was born April 2, 1910, to William Perl and Clara Beatrice Merry Smart in Irma, Alberta, Canada. He graduated from high school in Morocco, Ind. On Feb. 26, 1935, he married Mildred L. Miller in Evansville, Ind. He worked as a welder during World War II and the family lived in Missouri, Arizona and California before coming to La Grande in 1997.

He enjoyed gardening, being outdoors and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of La Grande; children and their spouses, Ken and Ellen Smart of La Grande, and Ethel May Thompson of Lawndale, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a sister, Elsie Bingham of Black Canyon, Ariz., and other relatives. Two sons, Donald and Floyd Smart, and six brothers and sisters all died earlier.

Delbert Dean Speck Jr., 44, of La Grande died Dec. 11 at his home of natural causes. A celebration of life was held this morning at Loveland Funeral Chapel with burial following at Union Cemetery.

Mr. Speck was born Feb. 28, 1960, to Delbert Dean and Janet Rae Kulp Speck in La Grande. He attended school in Oroville, Calif. and Wichita, Kan.

Survivors include a daughter, Christina Knight of Chico, Calif.; his father and step-mother, Delbert and Evelyn Speck, of Wichita, Kan.; his mother, Janet Kulp of La Grande; siblings and their spouses, Ronald and Sherry Speck, John Speck, Daniel Speck, and Gina and Adom Smith, all of Wichita, and Sheila Speck of La Grande; and other relatives.

Elden Waite

La Grande

Elden La Grande Waite, 86, of La Grande died Dec. 11 at a local care center. Viewing will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., and at 10 a.m. before the 11 a.m. funeral Saturday at the LDS Stake Center, 1802 Gekeler Lane. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mr. Waite was born March 4, 1918, to Appy Leo and Christianna Whiting Waite in La Grande. He graduated from La Grande High School in 1935. On March 22, 1939, he married Elizabeth Hendrickson in Walla Walla. They were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on June 6, 1939.

He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad from 1943 to his retirement in 1978.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints and held a number of positions in the church.

He served as a scout master with the Boy Scouts for several years and enjoyed hunting, camping and ranching.

Survivors include six sons and their spouses Ronald and Gwendolyn Waite, Wayne and Penny Waite, and Reed and Debbie Waite, all of La Grande; Dennis and Peni Waite of Pilot Rock, Richard and Martha Waite of Alpine, Utah, and Alan and Christy Waite of Weiser, Idaho; 39 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marrell Huntsman of Boise.

His wife, two sons, Elden and Robert, and four brothers all died earlier.

Frances Adams

Frances Elizabeth Adams, 90, died Dec. 11, in Elgin. A celebration of life will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley with Sally Wiens officiating. Burial will follow at the Elgin Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande.

Frances Elizabeth Adams was born on Feb. 4, 1914, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Beber Gilkson in Keating. She attended school in North Powder until her senior year when she moved to Elgin. She played basketball on the 1932 Elgin High School championship basketball team.

After graduation Frances met and married Ernest Adams in Union in 1933. Together the couple moved to Portland where Frances worked in the shipyards during World War II.

After the war ended, Frances and Ernest moved back to Elgin where together they opened Adams Supply Store. Frances was the bookkeeper and operator until her retirement in 1976. The couple took many trips together which included China, Hawaii, Kodiak, Alaska, and Mexico. She was very involved in the Good Sam club, a member of the Elgin Stampeders, the Elgin Stampeders drill team and the Elgin Women’s Service Club. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, playing cards, riding horses and spending time with family.

Survivors include her husband of Elgin; children and their spouses, Farrell and Jerry Maxwell of Haines, Betty and Gale Martin of Elgin, and Teri Adams and companion Randy High of Portland; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Nellie Dyke and one brother, Ross Gilkson. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elgin Ambulance, Elgin High School FFA or FBLA, all

James L. Jensen, 64, of Summerville died Dec. 14 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church. 902 Fourth St. Mr. Jensen was born Feb. 7, 1940, to Charles and Lucille Rasmussen Grimm in Chicago. In 1957 he married Shirley Hayes in Chicago. The couple later divorced and he remarried. Seven years later he divorced and remarried Shirley. The couple later moved to Summerville. He enjoyed camping, his dog Rocky and being with his family.

Survivors include his wife of Summerville; children and their spouses, Kathy and Robert Alee of Long Beach, Calif., James and Hilda Jensen of Indiana, and Mike Jensen of Los Angeles.; three grandchildren; a brother, Calvin Grimm of Chicago; and other relatives.

Patricia Sydney Neill, 59, of La Grande died Dec. 15 unexpectedly at her home. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. A celebration of life will begin at 3 p.m Saturday at the Faith Center, 10300 S. D St., Island City.

She was born March 15, 1945 in Kellogg, Idaho to Herb and Gaye McCreary Parrent. She married Larry Neill in 1963 in Weiser, Idaho. She lived in La Grande for 38 years. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and baseball, helping her granddaughter with 4-H projects, the beach, and walks to the pond with the grandkids.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Larry and Angie Neill, Lonnie and Ginger Neill, and Tricia and Jim Chatfield, all of La Grande, and Paula and Jim Gerlinger of Forest Grove; eight grandchildren; siblings and their spouses, Edie and John Sevy of Kettle Falls, Wash., Russel Parrent of San Diego, Calif., Christina and Lee Broadbent of St. Helens, and Carrie and Mitch Arnold of Spokane. Her husband and a sister died earlier.

Elmer Thomas Bates, 84, of La Grande died Dec. 15 at a local care center. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church, 902 Penn Ave., with the Rev. Mark Schlessman officiating.

Mr. Bates was born Aug. 19, 1920, to Thomas William and Laura Emma Elmer Bates. He graduated from Union High School in 1940 and served in the Navy as a sonar man on the U.S.S. Tulagi during World War II. He worked as a truck-driver for 33 years and drove over 2 1/2 million miles.

He was a member of the Rusty Wheels Car Club and the First Christian Church, and enjoyed woodworking, snowmobiling and Model T automobiles.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Ranee and John Haight of Twin Falls, Idaho, Chris Bates and Jay Webster of Portland, Leslie and Larry Foley of La Grande, Kim Bates of Springfield, Denise and Jerry Rosensteil of Forest Grove, and Garret and Teri Bates of Vancouver, Wash.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
