Quincy Arnold

Joseph

1918-2004

Quincy Albert Arnold, 86, of Joseph died Nov. 9 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. Burial was at Enterprise Cemetery.

Mr. Arnold was born in 1918 to Alvin and Cora Arnold in West Jefferson, N.C., and married in 1939. He served in the Army in 1944 and worked as a carpenter until his retirement. He enjoyed building furniture, going to yard sales, cutting firewood, sitting on the swing, looking at the mountains and telling jokes.

Survivors include his companion, Opal Patton; children and their spouses, Quincy Jr. and Lana Arnold of Joseph, Jones and Carol Arnold of Jonestown, Pa., Joyce Weidman of Peach Bottom, Pa., and Merinda and Ron Jensen of Enterprise; a sister, Beryl Bumgardner of West Jefferson; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. His wife, Ettie Virginia Arnold, three brothers and five sisters all died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the hospital foundation in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise.

Phil D. Yeargain

Union

1933-2004

Phillip "Phil" Dare Yeargain, 71, of Union passed away on Nov. 11 at his home.

Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, at 1 p.m. at the Union Cemetery. Jerry Baxter will be officiating at the services.

Phil was born on Aug. 19, 1933 in Hawasse, Ark., to Earl and Christine Skaggs Yeargain. He graduated from High School in Sulfur Springs, Ark. He later joined the Army and served his country in Germany during the Korean War. Phil graduated from what is now Boise State University. He married Trudy Wilde on Dec. 31, 1960 in Union.

Phil dedicated his life to ranching. He also raised and showed registered Angus. His love for ranching was recognized in 1996 when he won Union County Cattleman of the year. He owned and operated the Chevron Station in Union for over 25 years.

He is survived by his wife Trudy of Union; son and daughter-in-law Brian and Kristy of Boise and two grandchildren. His son Monte Dare and his parents preceded him in death.

Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Dave Dixon

Formerly of La Grande

Dave D. Dixon, 43, of Ontario and formerly of La Grande, died Monday in Ontario. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Haren-Wood Funeral Chapel, 2543 SW Fourth Ave., in Ontario.

The family suggests donations to a charity of choice in lieu of flowers.

Robert Dunn

Formerly of La Grande

1957-2004

Robert Delaine Dunn, 47, of Amity and formerly of La Grande and Baker City died Nov. 4. A memorial service will be held in the spring. Macy’s Funeral Home in McMinnville is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dunn was born Jan. 6, 1957, to Delaine and Bonnie Byrne Dunn in Baker City. He graduated from Grant Union High School in 1975 and served in the Army for 10 years. He lived in various places in eastern Oregon, including

La Grande, and moved to Amity in 1998. He worked as an auto mechanic and enjoyed cars, music and being with his family. He left a piece of himself with everyone he met, and will be remembered for his kindness.

Survivors include his companion, Rhonda Armour of Amity; her daughters, Madelline, Candice and Shauna Armour; his children, Athena Street-Morris of Evanston, Wyo., Olivia Dunn of Ladd, Ill., Brenda Dunn of Portland and Kevin Dunn of Redmond; six grandchildren; his parents of La Grande; siblings, Debi Shervey of Hermiston and Chris Dunn of La Grande, and other relatives.

Larry Sweet

La Grande

1931-2004

Walter Larry Sweet, 73, of La Grande died Nov. 12 at a local care center. At his request there will be no public service.

Mr. Sweet was born March 2, 1931, to Walter and Mary Sweet in Portland. He attended school in La Grande and served in the Army. He took over the family meat-cutting business, Sweet’s Meats, which he ran until 1975. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his children, Brad Sweet of Manzanita, Mike Sweet of San Antonio, Texas, and Brian Sweet of La Grande; seven grandchildren and other

relatives.

Buril Morris

Formerly of Telocaset

1917-2004

Buril Morris, 87, of Milton-Freewater and formerly of Telocaset, died Nov. 8 in Walla Walla. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Christian Church, 66 S. Actor St., in Dixie, Wash., with Pastor Mike Gonzales officiating. A reception will follow at 363 S. Third Ave., in Walla Walla.

Mr. Morris was born May 18, 1917, to Thomas Jefferson and Margaret Valonia Morgan Morris in Ada, Okla. On Feb. 2, 1936, he married Mildred "Sis" Blanche Lindsey in La Junta, Colo. The family had a ranch in Dixie from 1944 to 1957, bought and sold several others in Washington and one in Telocaset until he retired. The couple moved to Milton-Freewater in 2002.

He played the fiddle, mandolin and banjo, and was a member of the Bricklayers’ Union and the Blue Mountain Old Time Fiddlers’ Association, serving as vice president. He enjoyed animals and especially loved his great-grandchildren, giving each child a nickname.

Survivors include his wife of Milton-Freewater; children, Howard "Sonny" Morris of Irrigon, Chet Morris of Oklahoma, Sid Wayne Morris of Independence, H. Lee Morris of Boise, and Dorothy "Sissi" Easley of Walla Walla; two brothers-in-law, Robert Lindsey and Archie Lindsey, both of College Place; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. An infant daughter, Mary Margaret, died earlier.

Gertrude Murphy

Formerly of La Grande

1923-2004

Gertrude Marie Murphy, 80, of Portland and formerly of La Grande died Nov. 14 at a care center. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Portland. Burial will be in La Grande.

Mrs. Murphy was born Nov. 20, 1923, to Walter and Marie Theresa Sarnowski Goletz in Phoenix, Ill. She graduated from high school in Harvey, Ill, in 1941 and married Howard Joseph Murphy 10 days later.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, crafts, cooking, sewing and making both wine and beer. She won many blue ribbons at the Union County Fair, and had a shop for many years on Spruce St., Vintage Cottage, where she sold supplies and equipment for homemade wine and beer.

Survivors include children, H. Patrick Murphy of Olympia, Wash., J. Michael Murphy of Portland, and Trudy Lyster of Long Beach, Wash.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a brother, Walter Goletz Jr,. of Demotte, Ind., and a sister, Pearl Himschoot of Franklin, N.C. Her husband, a sister, Dorothy Buczek, died earlier.

Joyce Tippett

Wallowa

1928-2004

Ida Joyce Tippett, 76, of Wallowa died suddenly Nov. 12 in La Grande. A celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., in Enterprise. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Tippett was born May 20, 1928, to Edward and Hattie Meyers Davis in

La Grande. On Sept. 6, 1946, she married William S. Tippett in Wallowa, and worked as a bank teller for several years before retiring. She was a member of ESA Gamma Theta Sorority and the Elks auxiliary. She enjoyed, bowling, working in her yard, volunteering at the Wallowa Senior Center and the food bank, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include two daughters, Cathy Kiesecker of La Grande and Sheri Ominski of Portland; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth Davis of Wallowa and Clayton Davis of Seattle; a sister, Jackie April of La Grande, and a sister-in-law, Joanne Tippett of Clackamas.

Iris Martin

Island City

Iris E. Martin, 90, of Island City died Wednesday at her home. The funeral will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the LDS Church in Island City. Burial will be at Pinedale, Wyo.

Jesse Tuell

Enterprise

1913-2004

Jesse Tuell, 91, a longtime resident of Enterprise, died Nov. 18 at Kennewick, Wash.

Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Mountain View Christian Church, Highway 82 and Alpine Drive, Joseph.

Burial will be at Tribune, Kan.

He was born at Tribune, Sept. 27, 1913, and lived in Santa Cruz, Calif., for 33 years before moving to Enterprise in 1971.

He was a past member and officer of the American Association of Retired People, and a deacon and elder at the Mountain View Christian Church in Joseph.

He is survived by his wife, Esther (Scott) Tuell of Joseph; children, Edwyl (Tuell) Keenan of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; Allen C. Tuell of Kennewick; Kathleen (Tuell) Beck of Kamiah, Idaho; stepchildren Carol Kotz and Deniece Osterberg; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several step-grandchildren.

He was the husband of Evelyn (Clay) Tuell, deceased, and Catherine (Betty Tippett) Tuell, deceased.

Iris Martin

Island City

1914-2004

Iris Effie (Imeson) Martin, 90, was born Jan. 1, 1914, to Donnelly and Effie Imeson in South Park near Jackson, Wyo. She died Nov. 17 at her home in Island City.

A funeral service will be held at the LDS Chapel on McAlister Road in Island City at 9 a.m. Saturday. A memorial service will also be conducted at the LDS Chapel in Pinedale, Wyo. at 11 a.m. Monday with interment following in the family plot in the Pinedale Cemetery.

Her mother, Effie Jane Wilson, was reported to be the first "white child" born in Jackson’s Hole after her parents blazed a trail over Teton Pass from Idaho in 1989. Iris was raised in Jackson Hole and graduated from Jackson-Wilson High School in 1932. She was married to Robert W. "Buster" Martin in 1933 and in 1941 they bought a ranch and moved to Boulder, Wyo. They ranched and lived in Wyoming until they moved to Island City in 1991 to retire near family.

Iris worked hard all her life doing all the normal chores of running a ranch. She was known for her wonderful cooking, especially biscuits. In later years she enjoyed crocheting and making quilts, but most of all she loved her garden, beautiful flowerbeds and little dog, Harley.

Everyone who became acquainted with her after moving to Oregon commented on what a sweet lady she was. She has made many friends in the area even though she was quite reserved. No matter where Iris lived, a piece of her heart always remained somewhere near the beautiful Tetons in Wyoming.

She is survived by a sister, Rebecca Fleet of Cove; sons and daughters-in-law Loren and Myrtle Martin of Provo, Utah and Stuart and Cristine Martin of Island City, daughter and son-in-law Idonna and Gaylen Robison of Woodruff, Utah; 23 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, son Robert A., daughter Ardella Iris, brothers Don Imeson and John Simpson, and sisters Verna Simpson, Doris Branstetter and Lea Cranston.

Betty A. Strand

La Grande

1923-2004

Betty A. Strand, 81, of La Grande died at her home Oct. 29.

She will be buried at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mrs. Strand was born on Oct. 15, 1923, in La Grande to Thomas and Almo Olson Strand. She was raised and educated in La Grande, graduating from La Grande High School and what is now Eastern Oregon University.

She worked as the store manager for S & H Green Stamps for several years. She was also a bookkeeper for Nells N-Out.

She will be remembered and missed for her love for cats.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Richard, Sheldon and Thomas and her sisters Elaine Toll and Jeannette Robbs.

Merrill Blacker

Ramo Flats

1911-2004

Merrill Schuyler Blacker, 93, died Nov. 16 at Mount Diablo Hospital in Concord, Calif.

A graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Grandview Cemetery. Arrangements are with Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Mr. Blacker was born on Jan. 13, 1911, at Ramo Flats in Union County to Schuyler and Mary Wilda Moore Blacker. On May 2, 1934, he married Myrtus Helen Glenn at Weiser, Idaho, a marriage of 53 years

In 1936 they moved to California, where they lived until 1972 when he retired from U.S. Steel Corp. in Pittsburg, Calif., and returned to Oregon.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Davenport and Lynda Schwitters-Morell, both of Antioch, Calif.
