Daniel Baker

Daniel L. Baker, 56, of Summerville died April 9 at his home.

Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church, 901 Penn Ave., with Pastor Mark Schlessman officiating. Burial will be at the Summerville Cemetery.

Mr. Baker was born Nov. 29, 1947, to Maurice D. and Mildred R. Hofmann Baker in La Grande. He graduated from La Grande High School in 1966, and attended Eastern Oregon University. He served six years in the National Guard and married Betty Jean Glass on Aug. 18, 1973, in La Grande. He worked for Hub City Foods, Elgin Food Town, and Frito-Lay. In 1999, he began helping his wife at the Sub Shop, their restaurant on Fourth Street in La Grande.

Mr. Baker enjoyed farm work, being with friends, rodeos, western music, farm auctions, cattle sales, farm equipment, fishing, camping, Chief Joseph Days, traveling to the coast, and snowmobiling. He will be remembered for his quick sense of humor and his words of wisdom.

Survivors include his wife and mother, both of Summerville; four daughters and their husbands, Danette Baker, Wendi and Joe Fisher, and Kristi and Tyler Crook, all of Union, and Angie Baker of Summerville; two brothers and their wives, Dave and Arlene Baker of Imbler, and Ron and Carol Baker of Summerville; a sister and her husband, Christine and Michael Brinkman of Molalla; four grandchildren; and other relatives. His father died earlier.

Robert Cornford

Summerville

1932-2004

Robert Lavern Cornford, 71 died Easter Sunday, April 11 after an extended illness.

A celebration of life will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the 4-H Center on End Road in Summerville with Pastor Brent Clapp officiating. Fraternal services will be under the auspices of La Grande Lodge 41 A.F. &

A. M. Military honors and burial will follow at the Summerville Cemetery. Viewing will be Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Mr. Cornford was born June 2, 1932, in San Gabriel, Calif., to Walter Earl and Nina Babe Cornford.

When he was 7, they moved to Litchfield, Neb., and later to Flagstaff, Ariz., where he spent several years. He graduated from Flagstaff High School before joining the Marine Corps where he was sent to Korea.

Later he met and married Bobby Jean (Hunter) Alexander in Glendale, Calif., July 24, 1954.

Bob and Bobbie moved their family to La Grande in October 1973, then to Summerville in 1976 where they have lived since.

Through a lifetime of volunteerism, he has been a Boy Scout Leader, president of the Exchange Club of California, Little League coach in California and Oregon, master of the Pleasant Grove Grange, Grande Master of the Masonic Lodge 41 in La Grande, a Union-Wallowa-Baker Federal Credit Union board member and president of the Rusty Wheels Vintage Car Club, where he established friendships with many local enthusiasts.

He was a Union County 4-H leader for many years and president of the Leaders Association. Bob was also president of the Blue Mountain 4-H Center. 4-H was the highlight of his life, second only to his family. In the early 1980s he began the annual Union County 4-H radio auction with Ralph Hart and Jim Huber; the auction grossed nearly $1,200 a year to start. The auction continues with family leadership today and raises nearly $15,000 a year for local 4-H organizations.

His mother, father and infant sister, Nina Bernice, died earlier.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 50 years; his brother William Earl Cornford and wife Maxine of Kayenta, Ariz.; daughter Sherry Marie Nantz and her husband Kenneth; three sons and their spouses, Walter and Terri Cornford, Emmitt and Shirley Cornford and Devin and Debra Cornford. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one niece and two nephews.

Memorials may be made to The Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and the Union County 4-H Leaders Association.

‘Lennie’ Vaughn

Elgin

1924-2004

Eulenna E. "Lennie" Vaughn, 79, of Elgin died April 11 at Grande Ronde Hospital. Viewing will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at High View Cemetery in Ione.

Mrs. Vaughn was born Sept. 7, 1924, to Wilhelm G. and Pansy Jane Gwynne Seehafer in Philomath. She graduated from Ione High School in 1943 and worked in the Portland Shipyards as a welder during World War II. She married Walter W. Corley on Dec. 12, 1943. The couple settled in Ione where she worked for the Extension service, the school district and the Columbia Basin Electric Company. After her husband died she moved to Corvallis where she worked for Oregon State University. She returned to Ione and on April 3, 1965, she married Charles B. Vaughn in Reno, Nev. The couple lived in Hayfork, Calif., Weaverville, Calif., Boardman, and Irrigon before moving to Elgin in 1999.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the American Legion auxiliary. She enjoyed the outdoors, playing cards, social events and being with her family.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Ken Coe of Elgin; five sisters and their husbands, Margaret Smith of Baker City, Gladys Holderman of Corvallis, Jane and Ron Tye of Enterprise, Billie and Bill Ballweg of Fort Worth, Texas, and Mildred Tavares of Cameron Park, Calif.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, her mother-in-law, Thelma Coates of Beaverton; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Marianne and Bill Stiles of Beaverton. Her husband and a son died earlier.

‘Jim’ Frost

Formerly of La Grande

1920-2004

James L. "Jim" Frost, 84, of Hermiston and formerly of La Grande died April 10 at Grande Ronde Hospital while visiting family. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Burns Mortuary Chapel, 685 W. Hermiston Ave., in Hermiston. Burial will follow at the Hermiston Cemetery.

Mr. Frost was born March 17, 1920, to Earl and Maude Frack Frost in McMinnville. The family moved to Ladd Canyon in 1926 and he attended school at Clover Creek and North Powder. On Nov. 10, 1940, he married Eva John in Weiser, Idaho. The couple settled in La Grande where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He served in the Army during World War II in the 746th Railway Transpor-tation Corps in Europe. The family moved to Pendleton in 1948 and to Hermiston in 1951. He retired as the terminal yardmaster in 1982 after 41 years.

He volunteered with the Boy Scouts, was district chairman of the Blue Mountain Council, and was awarded the Silver Beaver in 1972. He was also a member of the LDS Church, the Elks Lodge, the VFW, the Union Pacific Old Timers and the Watermelon Good Sam Club. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of Hermiston; children and their spouses, Linda and Chet Bohannon of Camby, Ind., and Larry and Debra Frost of Hermiston; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two sisters, Leola Turner of Philadelphia, and Arelona Kilborn of St. Helens. An infant son, Rodney, and two brothers, Ronald and Jack, all died earlier.

Frances Babb

Formerly of Elgin

1907-2004

Frances Babb, 96, of Eugene and formerly of Elgin, died April 4. A memorial service was held in Eugene.

Mrs. Babb was born April 8, 1907, to William and Margaret Eckley Breshears in Elgin. On Feb. 16, 1926, she married Avon Dale Babb. He died in 1986. She lived in Eugene for 79 years. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, crossword puzzles, University of Oregon football and basketball, traveling and being with her family. She will be remembered for her sense of humor and her ability to remember facts, figures, people and places.

Survivors include children, Frances Latong of Chicago, Ill., Donna Brown of Portland, Nancy Gilmore, Alan Babb and Lee Babb, all of Eugene; 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Rebecca, died earlier.

Kenneth Rowland

Molalla

1960-2004

A memorial service for Kenneth Robert Rowland, 44, of Molalla will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Molalla Funeral Chapel.

Mr. Rowland, 44, died March 23 from an extended illness.

He was born March 13, 1960, in Van Nuys, Calif., to Don and Donna Rowland, and graduated from Agoura Hills High School in 1978.

On July 20, 1996, he married Marcia Hayter Rowland, who grew up in La Grande. The couple were regular visitors to the area, including hunting trips.

He worked in construction for New West and Eagle Elsner Inc. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and golfing. His biggest and most loved hobby was his children.

Survivors include his wife and two daughters, Kaitlin and Kirsten, all of Molalla; his mother and stepfather, Donna and Mike Brown of Agoura Hills, Calif.; a brother, Mike, of Simi Valley, Calif.; a grandmother, Cleo Bennedetti of Chatsworth, Calif.; and Terry Griffiths of La Grande, whom Kenneth and Marcia considered a "second mom.”

Beverlee

Crowson

Elgin

1926-2004

Beverlee Muriel Crowson, 77, of Elgin died April 12 at her home. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Elgin.

Mrs. Crowson was born Dec. 21, 1926, in Austin, Minn. She married Roy Elton and provided foster care to 32 children while living in Minnesota, and four in Oregon. She was also a volunteer for the Dorcas project offered by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Elgin.

Survivors include her husband of Elgin; children, Victor and David Sash, Wendy, Mark, and Jennifer; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Geniveve Taylor, and a brother, Norman Ekedal. A son, Bradley, died in childhood.

Sally Alexander

Sally Alexander, 90, died Thursday at a local care center.

Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

‘Pat’

Andrews-Howe

La Grande

1947-2004

"Pat" Andrews-Howe, 56, of La Grande, died April 14 at his home of natural causes.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Andrews-Howe was born May 31, 1947, in Dublin, Ireland, the son of S.S. and Marie Andrews Howe. He grew up in southwestern England and lived at Lamourn, Swindon and Brice Norton air bases. He was a professional photographer, and held a doctorate degree in robotics engineering and automation, as well as doctorates in theology, psychology and counseling. His main interest was in robotics engineering and automation.

He was knighted by the Pope in 1973. He married Nancy Reitmajer on Nov. 27, 1999 in La Grande. The couple lived in La Grande and owned and operated Stone Circles for two years. He greatly enjoyed computers, stones and nature.

Survivors include his wife; his mother Marie of Highworth, England; children and their spouses, Glenn and Sue Andrews-Howe of Glastonburg, England, and Tara and Paul Boulton of Calne, England; stepson, Mike Reitmajer of La Grande; seven brothers; three sisters; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.

Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Sally Booth Bowerman, 81, of Joseph died Wednesday. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. April 21 at the United Methodist Church in Joseph. Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A full obituary will be published later.

Billy Beck

Formerly of Union

1941-2004

Bill James "Billy" Beck, 63, of Kennewick, Wash., and formerly of Union died April 16 at Kennewick General Hospital. Viewing will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Mueller’s Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union in Kennewick. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Monday in Building 4 on the Benton Franklin Fairgrounds.

Mr. Beck was born April 29, 1941, to John and Verna Ashley Beck in Hermiston. He grew up in Telocaset on the family farm and graduated from Union High School in 1959. He served in the Army for two years, and on Jan. 4, 1961, he married Joyce Kennedy. The couple lived in various places in Union County until 1969, when they moved to Kennewick. He worked for Guenther Irrigation and New Holland Farm Equipment Co. as a parts man and later sales manager. In 1977 he was transferred to Ontario as store manager. After a short stay he was transferred back to Pasco in 1978 as the manager over the Pasco, Othello and Hermiston stores.

He worked until 1987 when he retired for health reasons.

He served on the board of the Benton Franklin Fair, and enjoyed the mountains, riding horses, snowmobiling, traveling in the West and Southwest and attending the fair.

Survivors include his wife of Kennewick; children and their spouses, Kent Beck of Spokane, and Steve and Heidi Beck of Pasco; four grandchildren; siblings and their spouses, Jack and Judy Beck of Montrose, Colo., Bob and Sharon Beck of Alicel, Eleanor and Norvin Coles of Cove, and Joyce and Lloyd Lanigan of Brooksville, Fla. A baby sister died earlier.
