Edith Bodyfelt

La Grande and Union

1913-2004

Edith M. Bodyfelt, 91, of La Grande and formerly of Union, died May 22 at a local care center. A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. June 5 at the Tillamook Odd Fellows’ Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Carter of the Nestucca Valley Presbyterian Church officiating.

Mrs. Bodyfelt was born March 30, 1913, to Homer and Nora Marian Cheney in New Plymouth, Idaho. She graduated from Union High School in 1931, and married Guy E. Watts in September of that year in Union.

In 1959 the couple moved to Pacific City where they had a restaurant. After her husband’s death in 1965 she worked as a cook and at Lincoln City Hospital as head dietitian. In November 1967 she married Walter Bodyfelt. She enjoyed gardening, travel, looking after children and being with her family.

Survivors include children, Marla Williams of Beaverton, Melba Wagner of Imbler, Bob Watts of Tucson, Ariz., and Deanna Robinson of Newberg; stepchildren, Floyd Bodyfelt of Corvallis, Bob and Richard Bodyfelt, both of Portland, George Bodyfelt of Cloverdale and Larry Bodyfelt of Rock Springs, Wyo.; 33 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and other relatives. Her husband, a son, Douglas Watts, two sisters, three brothers and a grandson all died earlier.

Beth Spikes

Elgin

1912-2004

Beth Krause Miller Spikes, 91, of Elgin died May 29 at her home.

The funeral will begin at 3 p.m. Friday at the Elgin Christian Church with Pastor Bill Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Elgin Cemetery.

Mrs. Spikes was born June 30, 1912, to George C. and Dora M. Dennerly Jewett in McLaughlin, S.D. She graduated from high school and married Stub Krause on June 20, 1936, in McLaughlin. The couple moved to Elgin, and he died in 1969. She worked at the hardware store and the drug store in Elgin.

On June 17, 1974, she married Francis Miller in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

After his death she married Lloyd Spikes on Aug. 28, 1997, in Reno, Nev. She served as Grand Marshall in the Elgin Stampede and was named the Queen Mother.

She was a member of the Stampeders, the Order of Eastern Star, the Phythian Sisters, the Women’s Service Club, a bridge club, the Cricket Flat Grange, the Eagles and the Elks. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, gardening, traveling and spending time with family.

Survivors include her husband of Elgin; children and their spouses, Carol and Bob Crouser, and Arnie and Judy Krause, all of Elgin; step-children, Ken Miller of Elgin, Ron Miller of Vernonia, Ted Miller of Gresham, Carroll Turk of Portland, Connie Flaskerud of Las Vegas and Mike Spikes of Corvallis; four grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Four sisters and three brothers died earlier.

Louie Barnett

La Grande

Louie E. Barnett Jr., 58, of La Grande died May 31 at his home. Private family services will be held at a later date. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Pat Zollman

Enterprise

Patricia "Pat" Zollman, 77, of Enterprise died Tuesday. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Cloverleaf Hall in Enterprise. Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A full obituary will be published later.

Marian Brizendine

La Grande

1919-2004

Marian L. Brizendine, 85, of La Grande died May 26 at a local care center.

A memorial service in Boise will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Summers Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brizendine was born Jan. 26, 1919, to Archibald and Viola Jenkins in Bristow, Okla. On Sept. 3, 1938, she married David Brizendine in Ontario. The couple were divorced in 1972. She lived in La Grande from 1960 to 1969 and for the past four years and had worked for J.C. Penney in La Grande, Pendleton and Boise. She enjoyed traveling, softball and bridge and was considered a rebel. Her friends called her Nerd, Precious or Sterns. She was a member of the sorority Epsilon Sigma Alpha, the Order of Eastern Star Hope Chapter, a charter member and past president of the Emblem Club in Ontario, past president of the Boise Eagles Auxiliary, and past president of the Idaho State Eagles auxiliary.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Cami and John Conners of Boise, Susan and Bob Schnell of La Grande, and Dan Brizendine of Los Angeles; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Billy Jenkins of Coarsegold, Calif., a sister, Jane Limbaugh of Chandler, Ariz., and other relatives.

A brother and a sister died earlier.

Robert Hancock

Formerly of Cove

1921-2004

Robert Brooks Hancock, 82, of York, Mont., and formerly of Cove died June 1 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Helena, Mont. Burial was at Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison, Mont.

Mr. Hancock was born Dec. 10, 1921, to Charles and Brooks George Hancock on the family farm near Cove. He graduated from Cove High School and served in the South Pacific for the Navy during World War II.

In 1945 he married Jean Horner. The couple lived in Missoula, Mont., where he worked at Westmont Tractor and for Missoula Cartage.

After his wife’s death, he married Lorraine Reese in 1985. They moved to York in 1998.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, woodworking, gardening, reading, especially about World War II, and being with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of York; his mother and father-in-law, Archie and Nola Smith of Helena; a sister, Phyllis Tarter of Cove; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four stepchildren, Mary Yuricic of East Helena, Curt Reese of Bozeman, Karen Reese-Schwenk and Mark Reese, both of Helena; five stepgrandchildren, and Bill Dellinger, who was like a son.

A son, Gary, and a brother-in-law, Vic Tarter, both died earlier.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to any charity.

Marjorie Martens

La Grande

1918-2004

Marjorie Luciele Martens, 86, of La Grande died June 1. A graveside service will begin at

11 a.m. Friday at Grandview Cemetery Mausoleum.

Mrs. Martens was born March 28, 1918, to Ray and Ellen Ross Alexander in Union. She married Clark Martens.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Kris Martens of Lake Oswego; a sister, Marceile Droke of Union, and other relatives. Her husband, a sister, Agnes Rogers, and a son, Niles Martens, all died earlier.

Nellie Heryford

La Grande

1912-2004

Nellie M. Heryford, 91, of La Grande died June 2 at a local care center. No services will be held.

Mrs. Heryford was born Nellie Fisher on Nov. 7, 1912, in Cove. She attended school there and married Glen Heryford on Sept. 28, 1945. The couple moved to La Grande in 1980. She was a homemaker.

She enjoyed traveling, spending winters in Arizona, playing cards and fishing. She was a charter member of the Cove Sportsman’s Club, and was a member of the Union VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband of La Grande and other relatives. A sister died earlier.

Keith Delaney

Formerly of Union

1934-2004

James Keith Delaney, 69, of Pacific City and formerly of Union died May 24.

A memorial service will take place 2 p.m. June 12 at the Central Building, Pacific City. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery.

Mr. Delaney was born Oct. 7, 1934, to Roy Eldred and Vennie Florence Brown Delaney in Union. He graduated from Union High School and in 1955 he married Cheryl Sue Forsythe.

In 1961 the couple moved to Pacific City, where he worked as a manager of Pacific City Supply and Lumber Co., as a building contractor, commercial fisherman and in retail marketing. He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce and chair of the Pacific City Water District. He began a one-penny refund for bottles and cans, which became the basis for the Oregon Bottle Bill. Today many other states have adopted the program that originated in Pacific City.

Mr. Delaney volunteered in the Salmon-Trout Enhancement Program and worked under contract with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to control cormorant predation on the Nestucca River. He began several public-safety projects in Pacific City, and checked on beach homes during storms. He was always on the scene to help during floods, and he provided salmon and oysters for Legislative gatherings in Salem, at the Dory Festival and the annual Soil and Water District meeting in Pacific City.

He enjoyed county-western music and performed at special events with various bands.

Survivors include his wife of Pacific City; children, Robert Delaney, Cathi Fasching, Shelly Cloud and Steve Delaney; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; his mother; sisters, Wythel Aldrich and Vera Walker, and other relatives.

Bonnie Gjelde

Formerly of Joseph

1918-2004

Bonnie Jean Gjelde, 86, of Sherwood and formerly of Joseph died May 24 in Portland. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Joseph United Methodist Church with a reception afterwards at the Joseph Masonic Lodge.

Mrs. Gjelde was born Jan. 7, 1918, to Jess and Mary Sasser Dougherty in Enterprise. After the death of her mother in 1926 she went to live with George and Alice Palm in Sandpoint, Idaho. She attended the University of Idaho and married her high school sweetheart Paul Gjelde. The family moved to Portland, where she worked as advertising manager of Maytag Northwest Co. In 1971, after his retirement, the couple moved to Joseph where she was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Order of Eastern Star and Beta Sigma Phi. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, reading, writing, painting and her family. Health reasons compelled her to Sherwood to live with her daughter in 1997.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Eric and Patricia Gjelde of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Nora Johnson of Sherwood, and Earl and Sandra Gjelde of Loveland, Colo.; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Pat Patterson of Banning, Calif., sisters-in-law, Clara Davis of Spokane and Margaret Grosetta of Tucson, Ariz., and other relatives. Her husband died in 1985.
