Dr. Bryce Dailey Moffit, 72, of Enterprise died May 11. A graveside service will begin at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday May 17 at the Lostine Cemetery. Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Moffit was born Dec. 16, 1932, to Floyd and Emmeretta Pugh Moffit in Wallowa. He graduated from Wallowa High School in 1950 and attended Eastern Oregon Normal School. On Feb. 13, 1954, he married Myrtle Hayes in Wallowa, and in 1956 graduated from the University of Oregon Dental School. He served in the Army Reserve at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, Fort Lewis in Washington and at Elmendorf Air Base in Alaska. He opened a dental practice in Enterprise in 1958 and retired in 2001 after 43 years.

He served several terms on the Enterprise City Council and one term as major. He was a member of the Elks and supported school sports. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and touring the country.

Survivors include his wife of Enterprise, a son, Charles, and other relatives. A brother, Bruce Moffit died earlier.

Leah Jean Williams, 50, of Pendleton and formerly of La Grande died May 13 at St. Anthony Hospital. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Williams was born May 4, 1955, to eugene and Josephine Amanda Shimanek in Stayton. She graduated from La Grande High School and in 1978 from beauty school in Pendleton. She worked in Pendleton and Portland, most recently at the Eastern Oregon Training Center as an aide. She was the Blue Mountain Rodeo Princess in 1970. she married Lloyd Williams in Pendleton. The couple were later divorced.

She had many hobbies and talents but her passion was horses. She groomed and showed horses for years and won many first-place ribbons. He enjoyed gardening and could make anything flourish.

Survivors include sons, Ryan Williams of Pendleton and Mack Cross of Beaverton; siblings, Lynne Dixon and David E. Smith, both of La Grande, Janet Jones of Gresham, Carol Hutson Smith, Dennis D. Smith of Hawaii and Daryl Shimanek of Portland; and other relatives.

Frances Faye Bryte, 68, of Magna, Utah, and formerly of Union County died May 14. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Friday May 20 at Valley View Funeral Home, 4335 West 4100 South in Magna.

Mrs. Bryte was born October 27, 1936, to Joseph Clark Bovard and Faye Vachon in Merrimac, Mass. She lived in Union County and on March 10, 1979, married Wilber Bryte in Sun Valley, Calif.

She was a member of the Catholic Church.

Survivors include by her husband of Magna; children and their spouses, Diana Richardson, Stan and Deb Severe, Jerry and Brenda Watkins and Tom and Denease Bovard; a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Lena Bovard; 15 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Harold Clifton Noble, 91, of Beaverton and formerly of Cove, died May 14 in Hillsboro. The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., with Pastor Steve Kirkeby officiating. Burial will follow at Cove Cemetery.

Mr. Noble was born June 10, 1913, to James Monroe and Myrtle Bell Noble in Dubois, Ind. He was raised by his aunts and uncles before going to the Indiana Sailors’ and Soldiers’ Orphanage.

At the age of 13 he joined the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West Show. He traveled the country with the circus for three summers before going to work in the shipyards in Oakland, Calif.

He served in the Army during World War II, and on Sept. 25, 1943, he married Lorita Craft in Wichita, Kan. They had a farm in Jenkins, Mo., before moving to Oregon in 1955. He worked at the Kinzua Sawmill before settling in Cove.

He was a past member of the Calvary Baptist Church, and enjoyed fishing on the Snake River, reading and working crossword puzzles.

Survivors include his wife of Beaverton; children and their spouses, Carol "Sis" June Noble of Beaverton, Cecil and Lilas Noble of Huntington, Linda and Michael Dow of Hawthorne, Nev., Patrick and Darra Noble of Aloha, Frances and Richard Jacklin of Beaverton, and Karen Collins of La Grande; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives. A brother, Farvell Noble, and a sister, Juanita Noble, died earlier.

Jacqueline Kinnick, 76, of , Hermiston and formerly of Summerville died May 15 at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston. At her request there will be no funeral. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kinnick was born June 28, 1928, to Walter and Cecila Macheski Jakubowski in Ashton, Neb. On Nov. 9, 1959, she married Fred Walter Kinnick in Las Vegas, Nev. They lived in California until 1966 when they moved to Summerville, and in 1975, to Hermiston. She was a homemaker and was baptized in the Catholic Church. Her passion was her family and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of Hermiston; children and their spouses, John and Jean Kinnick, and Kate and Ron Ledbetter, all of La Grande; a daughter-in-law, Shelly Kinnick of Hermiston; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A son, William Walter Kinnick, two brothers, Rob and Rich Jakubowski and a sister, Mary Springer, all died earlier.

Carole Lee Marks, 68, of Cove died May 14 in Elgin at the home of her sister. Burial was at Grandview Cemetery.

Mrs. Marks was born Sept. 9, 1936, to Freddie Amos "Bud" and Emma Augusta "Judy" Baum Butterfield in La Grande, but used the name of her stepfather, Douglas Holman, while growing up.

She attended school in San Francisco, Calif., including the San Francisco Riding Academy, and graduated from La Grande High School in 1955. She served in the Air Force, and on Feb. 28, 1957, she married Larry Marks, also serving in the Air Force, in a military service in Fort Worth, Texas.

While living near John Day, she learned meat-cutting, and for the last five years she worked at Achilles Custom Cuts and Deli in La Grande.

She was a member of the Baum Family Association and served as assistant historian-genealogist. She was a life member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and enjoyed playing the piano, painting, woodworking and quilting.

Survivors include her husband of Cove; children and their spouses, Kory and Renae Marks of La Pine, Kurtis Marks of Richland and Kyle Marks of Medford; five grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Nikki Rae and Gene Hatfield; aunts and uncles, Laura Mae Marshall of La Grande, June Butterfield Stanley of Salem and Percy Hiatt Baum of Walla Walla; and other relatives. A son, Kelly, died earlier.

Robert Clinton Sheehy, 79, of High Valley near Union died May 15 at his home.A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, May 23 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Union, with Father Hank Albrecht officiating.

Mr. Sheehy was born April 8, 1926, to Hugh Francis and Helen Merritt Holbrook Sheehy in Baker City.He grew up on Swayze Creek near Durkee, attended elementary school at the Plano School, and graduated from Baker High School in 1944. He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 on Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands, and after World War II in the Marine Corps Reserve. On June 29, 1947, he married Dona Gene Storie in Baker City.They moved to High Valley in 1956.

He worked at the cement plant at Lime as a rock driller and then for Boise Cascade in La Grande as a millwright from 1968 to 1988.He was a member of Catholic Church, and enjoyed reading, ranching and being with his family.

Survivors include by his wife of High Valley; children, Robert and Patricia Sheehy of Thoiry, France, Kathleen and Dwight Bloom of Halfway, Daniel and Meleah Sheehy, and Abel and Sherry Mendoza, all of La Grande, John and Sandy Sheehy, Jim and Sally Sheehy, Tim Sheehy and Gloria Kleck, Kevin and Susie Sheehy, and Stephen and Susan Sheehy, all of Union, Rosemary and Kim Edd of North Bend, Theresa and Dwight Page of Sandy, Dona and Mark Servid, and Eileen and Brent Gyllenberg, all of Baker City; 32 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Tom Sheehy of Missoula, Mont., a sister, Mary Heriza of Baker City, and brother and sister-in-law Richard and Darlene Sheehy of Baker City.Siblings Hugh Sheehy, Ruth Becker and Helen Langley died earlier.

Mina Margaret Houser, 95, of Elgin, died May 16 at her home.

A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley with Sally Wiens officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Lostine Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Mrs. Houser was born at Lostine March 30, 1910, to Simon Peter and Grace Angeline Fitzpatrick Crow. She graduated from Lostine High School, attended Willamette University for one year and also attended Monmouth Normal School before graduating with the first class at Eastern Oregon College in 1929.

She was married to Lloyd J. Houser on Sept. 2, 1929, and spent 20 years teaching school in Wallowa County. She and Lloyd later purchased the hardware store in Elgin, and they operated it together until her retirement in 1972. Mrs. Houser became a member of the Church of the Nazarene in 1973.

Survivors include four grandchildren, four great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and other relatives. A daughter, Mina Jean Gregory; brothers Gale, Paul and Wayne Crow; and a sister Thelma Childers all died earlier.

Shirley E. Hiatt, 78 of La Grande, died May 17 at a local care center. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hillcrest Cemetery in La Grande with the Rev. Mark Schlessman officiating. Arrangements are with Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Mrs. Hiatt was born on Oct. 13, 1926, the daughter of Horace and Helen Broxson Hart in Walla Walla. She spent most of her earlier years in Prescott, Wash., before moving to Milton-Freewater where she attended school and graduated with the class of 1944.

After high school Shirley married her school sweetheart, Clark Hiatt on July 6, 1945, in Boca Raton, Florida. Together the couple traveled the world, Alaska, Mexico, Europe, Canada, and to Mount Rushmore to name a few.

Mrs. Hiatt worked in banking and as a secretary. She and Clark moved to La Grande in 1952. She was an accomplished violinist and offered lessons to many; she was a concert master of the Grande Ronde Symphony and worked for Dr. Rhodes Lewis in his music store and 20 years for the Oregon Highway Department before her retirement in January 1988.

Mrs. Hiatt was a member the First Christian Church. She enjoyed music, fishing, sewing, computers and traveling.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years; children and their spouses, Richard and Barbara Hiatt of Beaverton and David Hiatt and Jerri Richardson of Enterprise; sister, Denise Breen of Spokane; four grandchildren; and other relatives.

Walter Scott Lovely, 92, of La Grande, died May 18 at his home.

A graveside service will begin at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Grandview Cemetery with Sally Wiens officiating. Arrangements are with Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Mr. Lovely was born Feb. 19, 1913, the son of Edwin and Emma Jane DeFries Lovely in La Grande. He spent most of his life in the Grande Ronde Valley except for a short time served in the Army during World War II.

After his honorable discharge Walter returned the La Grande. In 1937 he married Gertrude Ella Peterman in Walla Walla, and together the couple remained in La Grande where he worked in lumber yards for most of his career.

Mr. Lovely’s family operated an ice house during his early years along the same river that took his home in the flood of 1965.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cutting wood, spending time with his family and was a favorite uncle to his nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his daughter and her spouse, Carol and Dale Mattson of Island City; grandchildren and their spouses, Cheri and David Keffer, Cindy and Ronnie Bonney, Christie and Mike Hedden and Stacy and Locy Mattson; eight great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. His Parents, brothers, Tom Lovely, Harlan Lovely, Herb Lovely, Fred Lovely, Frank Lovely and a sister Bertha Standley.

Chester Edward Held, La Grande, died May 17, 2005. Graveside services will be conducted later this month in Middletown, Calif. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is handling arrangements.

Mr. Held was born Nov. 8, 1915, in Chicago to Edward Henry and Elizabeth Held.

He married Viona Haycock April 9, 1939.

Toward the end of World War II, Mr. Held was called in to the Marine Corps Reserves, but didn’t see action during the remainder of the war.

He retired as a letter carrier from the U.S. Postal Service in 1977, when he and Vi moved to Middletown, Calif. He was active with the Lions of Conestoga Park, Calif., and Middletown. He also enjoyed golfing with the Elks Lodge.

During the 1990s, the Helds were active volunteers with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

After his wife’s death in 2001, Mr. Held moved to La Grande to live with his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Donna Held.

Survivors include Joseph and Donna Held., La Grande; three grandchildren; a sister, Vida McConnell of Grass Valley, Calif.; and several other relatives. Dying earlier were his wife, a daughter, two grandsons and a sister.
