Union and Wallowa counties escaped major mishap over the Thanksgiving Day weekend, despite some stormy weather and freezing temperatures.
In Union County, police and emergency crews reported several "fender-bender" traffic crashes, but no injuries.
Snow fell Sunday and early today, blanketing the region with an approximately 2-inch accumulation. Icy road conditions prevailed early this morning.
The Oregon Department of Transportation posted a Severe Weather Hazard warning this morning for Meacham and Cabbage Hill on Interstate 84 west of La Grande, and at Ladd Canyon to the east.
Tom Strandberg of ODOT said the westbound lanes of I-84 near Cabbage Hill were closed at about 10 a.m. Sunday because of spun-out vehicles blocking the road.
No injuries were reported and the lanes were open again about noon, Strandberg said.
Packed snow was reported on the roadway in both areas. Motorists are required to carry tire chains or be equipped with traction tires.
At Tollgate on the Weston-Elgin Highway, a Severe Weather Hazard warning was in effect and chains or traction tires were required for travel.
Severe Weather Hazard warnings also were in place this morning for the Minam Summit and in much of Wallowa County.
No traffic-related injuries were reported in Wallowa County over the weekend.
The National Weather Service is forecasting an extreme drop in temperatures in the region over the next two days, with lows around 12 degrees expected.
Motorists are advised to heed weather warnings, and carry chains or traction devices.
