Ella Maud Bohnenkamp, 87, of Enterprise died March 18. At her request there will be no funeral.

Mrs. Bohnenkamp was born Aug. 5, 1918, to William Price and Hettie Guendolen Cole Applegate in Barrons, Alberta Canada. The family returned to Enterprise in1923 where her parents started a trucking and cold storage business.

On Dec. 30, 1939, she married William Bohnenkamp of La Grande. The couple moved to Beaverton in 1963, and in 1968, retired in Mohave Valley, Ariz.

She loved the Wallowa Mountains, where she maintained a summer home, and enjoyed hiking. She was an accomplished seamstress and quilter.

Survivors include sons, William Bohnenkamp of Bend, John Bohnenkamp of Aloha and Robert Bohnenkamp of Joseph; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Her husband; a sister, Florence Templeton; and a grandson died earlier.

Vincent E. Gibson, 87, of La Grande died March 24 at his home. Viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1 at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mr. Gibson was born Sept. 28, 1918, to Clarence Eugene "Smiley" and Nora Duckett Gibson in La Grande. He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the Military Police, and on Jan. 22, 1944, he married Darlene Millering in La Grande. He worked as a stationary engineer for Eastern Oregon College and retired in 1982.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.

Survivors include his sons, Phillip Gibson and Rickey Gibson, both of Pendleton, and Michael Gibson of La Grande; two sisters, Delores Allen of La Grande and Aretha Steinbeck; and other relatives. His wife and brothers, William and Clarence Gibson Jr., and a sister, Inez Kiddle, all died earlier.

Minnie Ruth Simpson, 94, of Enterprise died March 26 at a care center. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday March 30 at the Enterprise Christian Church. Burial will be in Cameron, N.C., at the Rocky Fort Cemetery.

Mrs. Simpson was born Jan. 7, 1912, to John Lee and Effie Ruth Key Marion in Rockford, Surry County, N.C. Her mother died of influenza and the children were raised by their father and grandparents, Jerry Freeman and Letita Martin Snow Marion. She graduated from high school in Cameron as valedictorian, and attended Edward Business College at High Point, N.C.

On Jan. 1, 1934, she married Buttz Edgar Simpson in Cameron. He died in 1950.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Wanda Ruth and Harold D. Jensen, Wilma Lee Wallace, and Jerry Coleman and Barbara Jean Simpson, all of Enterprise; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Doris Letha Courtney, 78, of Burns and formerly of Union and Wallowa counties died March 28. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday April 1 at LaFollette Chapel, 332 W. Monroe St., Burns. Burial in the Burns Cemetery will be private.

Mrs. Courtney was born Sept. 5, 1927, to John and Marjorie Miller in La Grande. She grew up in Cove on a dairy farm, and was a princess at the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show and the Elgin Stampede. She graduated from Cove High School in 1944, and attended Eastern Oregon College of Education before moving to Portland to work for the Oregonian newspaper.

On April 11, 1948, she married Harold "Jim" Courtney in Union County. They lived in Joseph and Enterprise where he was a teacher before moving to Burns where he was the ESD superintendent until his retirement in 1988.

She was a charter member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and enjoyed golf, bridge, crossword puzzles, card games and dancing.

Survivors include her husband; a brother and sister-in-law, Edmond and JeanAnn Miller of Beaverton; children and their spouses, Dan and Janyce Courtney of Pendleton, Dave and Nancy Courtney of Burns, and Steve and Diane Courtney of Burney, Calif.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

Stewart Erwin Campbell, 64, of Elgin died Mrch 22 at a hospital in Walla Walla. A private family service will be held. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Campbell was born Nov. 15, 1941, to Lyle and Lauretta Harrison Campbell in Seattle, Wash. He attended school there, and married Elaine Peters in Kent, Wash., in 1985. They moved to Elgin in 1995.

He enjoyed working on diesel motors and model railroads.

Survivors incude his wife of Elgin; a son, Mark Campbell of Kalama, Wash., two grandchildren; and a sister, Susan Lockhart of Sumner, Wash.

Dr. George Franklin Elrod, 56, of Starkville, Miss., and formerly of Union County died March 22 in Tupelo, Miss. Burial was at Oktibbeha Memorial Park. Welch Funeral was in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Elrod was born in Union County. He graduated from Mercer Island High School and was the recipient of the distinguished service award from Mississippi State University. He was a professor in the department of counseling, educational psychology and special education at MSU. He was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jennifer Elrod, and a daughter, Andrea Elrod, both of Starkville; and his mother Rose Marie Blake Elrod of Tavares, Fla.

Karrel Johnson, 70, of Wallowa died March 15 while vacationing in Laredo, Texas. Burial was at Bramlet Cemetery. Bollman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson was born Dec. 6, 1935, to Ed and Edna Erickson Stowe in La Grande. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1953, and was queen of the Elgin Stampede. On Dec. 12, 1953, she married Wayne Johnson. She worked at the family store, Shell Mercantile Inc., the Oregon Department of Forestry in Wallowa and for the Wallowa public schools. She was an artist and played the piano, and was active in 4-H, the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, Eastern Star and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing, playing with her horses and dogs, riding four-wheelers and being with her grandchildren. She was full of life.

Survivors include her husband of Wallowa; her mother, Edna Flanery of La Grande; children and their spouses, Kerry and Darlene Johnson of Wallowa, Karl and Guinevere Johnson of Bend, Karin and Chris Nix of Hico, Texas, and Kristi Johnson of Umatilla; and two grandchildren. Her father died earlier.

Melvin Clifford Patrick, 73, of La Grande died March 27. Viewing will be from 6 to 7:30 Sunday April 2 and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at the LDS Stake Center, 1802 Gekeler Lane. The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Monday with Bishop George Chadwick officiating. Burial will be at the Summerville Cemetery.

Mr. Patrick was born April 25, 1932, to James Clifford and Thelma Giles Patrick in Wendell, Idaho. He graduated from Imbler High School in 1950, and attended Brigham Young University. On April 2, 1953, he married Renee Bailey in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah. After a divorce he married Judith Ann Gustafson-Hempel in the LDS Temple in Seattle, Wash.

He grew up outside of Summerville and lived in Pilot Rock and Hermiston. He and his second wife ran Mel’s Heating Service for more than 35 years. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved to serve his fellow man.

Survivors include his wife of La Grande; two sisters and their husbands, Carol and Bob Pace of Roseburg, and Charlotte and Bob Herrmann of Bend; children and their spouses, Colleen and Bart Fullmer of Everett, Wash., David and Rena Patrick of Rowlett, Texas, Marianne and Mike Davidson of Federal Way, Wash., Kevin and Andrea Patrick of Goodyear, Ariz., Monica and Bret Bird of Meridian, Idaho, Mark Hempel of Otis, Eric and Amy Hempel of Klamath Falls, Brian and Sejena Hempel of Oregon City, Krista and Joe Secl of La Grande, and Kari and Dustin Countryman of La Grande; 27 grandchildren and other relatives.

Sophia Hunt, 88, of La Grande died March 28 at her home. A graveside service will be private.

Mrs. Hunt was born April 19, 1917, to John and Lina Hilburger Gietlhuber in Seattle, Wash. She graduated from La Grande High School in 1934, and attended Draper School of Commerce and graduated from Eastern Oregon Normal School in 1945 and again with a master’s degree in 1955.

On December 23, 1960, she married R. Alan Hunt. She also attended Washington State University, Whitman College, Portland State University, Lewis and Clark College, Central Washington University, the University of Washington and Walla Walla College.

She enjoyed traveling and lived in India from 1966-1973, and in Singapore from 1973-1981.

She worked as a bookkeeper, credit assistant, stenographer, in foreign exchange, sales and as a secretary to businesses in La Grande, Spokane, Walla Walla and Portland.

She taught for 20 years in Walla Walla, and became director of curriculum of the Walla Walla County schools. She taught in Lake Oswego, Oakland, Calif., Gresham, Portland, Olympia, Wash., Shelton, Wash., and New Delhi, India.

She was a member of NEA, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Cattlemen’s Association and the Cattlewomen’s Association.

Survivors include a sister, Georgene Critchlow of Pendleton, and other relatives. Her husband and three sisters, Theresa Sanderson, Mary Anne Swindley and Elsie Spencer, all died earlier.

Belva Evelyn Bradshaw, 87, of La Grande, died March 30 at a local care center. Burial will be at the Summerville Cemetery. There will be no funeral. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bradsahw was born Aug. 11, 1918, to Henry Isodore and Nicalene "Lena" Jacopena Shelsted Omdahl in Marx, Saskatchewan, Canada. The family returned to Minnesota and her mother died of the flu. She and her twin sister were adopted by Arthur and Violet Hibberd. Another sister was adopted by a different family.

The family moved to Oregon in the early 1930s. She met her sisters, father and other relatives when she was 18.

She married Donald Bradshaw, and lived in La Grande her entire adult life. She became an optician, grinding lenses by hand for the American Optical Co. for 21 years. She enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping and vacationing in Arizona.

Survivors include her twin sister, Lillian Olson of Dawson, Minn.; adoptive siblings, Georgia Adams of Wasilla, Alaska, Ray Hibberd of Parma, Idaho, and Rachael Ruth of Fremont, Calif.; a stepson and his wife, Jerry and Terri Bradshaw of La Grande; six grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and other relatives.

Her husband, a sister, Mildred Omid, and an adoptive sister, Opal Stubblefield, all died earlier.
