Doyle Glenn Densley, 78, of Baker City died Feb. 10 at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise. Burial was today Feb. 14 at the Eagle Valley Cemetery with Pastor Ralph Holcomb of the Baker City Christian Church officiating.

Mr. Densley was born Sept. 24, 1927, to Aaron and Edna Eidson Densley in Richland. He graduated from high school in Eagle Valley and helped his parents run a pack string and guide business into the Wallowa Mountains. He also worked with his grandfather, William Densley, on the family sheep and cattle ranches.

He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II and the Army during the Korean War. He worked in the timber industry and on June 1, 1948, he married Lillian Caroline Cummings in Baker City.

He worked on the Brownlee Dam as a heavy-duty tireman and specialized all his career in maintaining large equipment tires. He worked on road and dam projects in Oregon, California and Washington, and on the Alaska pipeline until his retirement in 1988.

He appreciated history. His unfinished book on the history of the Sparta area is called "Sparta Gold." He enjoyed trapping, gold mining, using a metal detector and wood working, especially making laminated bowls from exotic wood.

Survivors include his wife of Baker City; children, Aaron Densley and Carla Koplein, both of Baker City, Jody Munsey of Florence, Ariz., and Julie Green and her husband Doug of Lebanon, Ohio; a sister, Margaret Corning of Baker City; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Emma Jean Greener and Madonna Ashby, and other relatives, including a cousin and close friend, Jim Eidson of Baker City. A brother, Damon Ned Densley died earlier.

Alyce Leone Whittemore, 92, of La Grande died Feb. 11 at Wildflower Lodge. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 at Zion Lutheran Church, 902 Fourth St. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery.

Mrs. Whittemore was born April 27, 1913, to Ole and Bertha Torgeson Estensen in Cyrus, Minn. She taught school beginning at the age of 17 in rural Minnesota. She graduated from Morehead State College and taught in Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana. On Dec. 14, 1940, she married John Gooch Whittemore in Lewiston, Idaho. During World War II she worked for Boeing in Seattle while attending the University of Washington. The family moved to La Grande in 1948.

She was past president of PEO Chapter DK, and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the La Grande Country Club. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, traveling with her husband and being with her birthday club friends.

Survivors include children and their spouses, John G. Whittemore of Portland, and Bill and Linda Whittemore, and Steve and Melinda Whittemore, all of La Grande; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her husband, sisters Ruby, Pearl and Idella, and two brothers, Irvin and Roy, all died earlier.

LaVelle Fazzari, 70, of Walla Walla died Jan. 29. Burial was at Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla.

Mrs. Fazzari was born June 6, 1935, to Charles and Eva Shane Taylor in Milton-Freewater. She graduated from La Grande High School in 1953 and on June 12, 1954, married Rudy Fazzari in Walla Walla. She worked at grocery and retail stores and retired in 1994. She was a member of the Catholic Church and served on the St. Francis Parish Council, and was a member of St. Ann’s Altar Society and the Italian Heritage Association. She enjoyed traveling to the Oregon Coast and being with her family.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Jaynie and Bryan Blanc of Burbank, Wash., and Steve and Delia Fazzari of Spokane; four grandchildren; siblings and their spouses Dean and Marilyn Taylor and Virginia Taylor, all of Walla Walla, Mary Taylor of Tacoma, Wash., Joan and Bill Pontarolo, Mike and Doris Fazzari, and Carol and Ed Stephans of Spokane; and other relatives.

Her husband, an infant daughter, Cynthia, brothers, Darrel, Norm, Mick and Ardele Taylor, all died earlier.

Doris Muriel Hibberd, 92, of Elgin, died Feb. 12 at her home. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 15 at the Elgin Cemetery.

Mrs. Hibberd was born July 21, 1913, to William Henry and Lura Barnes Miller on Cricket Flat near Elgin. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1931, and on July 3,1933, she married Kermit Myers in Elgin. They had the Corner Market grocery store for 41 years. After his death in 1979, she married Reid Hibberd in 1987.

She was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star, and enjoyed traveling, bowling and being with her family.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Marlys and Robert Frink of Kennewick, and Arlee and Melody Myers of La Grande; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and other relatives. Her husband, a sister, Ruth Hazelwood, two brothers, Ralph and Fred Miller, and a grandson, Michael Ray Burnett, all died earlier.

Spencer Arthur John "Art" Poncy, 92, of La Grande died Feb. 13 at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday Feb. 16 at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. Burial at the Cove Cemetery will be private.

Mr. Poncy was born Feb. 12, 1914, to and Joseph Paul and Clarinda Therese Guithelmine Mandeville Poncy in San Bernardino, Calif. In 1930 he married Loretta Marie Wheeler there. He worked for his father in the roundhouse of the Santa Fe Railroad and at Emmson’s Dairy during The Depression, and later for Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego, Calif. During World War II he taught women employees to build aircraft. He worked on the City Creek Road in San Bernardino for Artucovich Co. and the Great American Canal for Matich Brothers, and in Los Angeles for Murray Co., a plumbing and heating company. He ran three shops for 23 years. When he retired the couple moved to Wonder Valley, Calif., and after her death in 1993, he moved to Cove in 1994 to live with his daughter and son-in-law.

He was a member of the Torrance, Calif., Elks Lodge, the Catholic Church and a volunteer fireman in Wonder Valley, and enjoyed working on cars and making them run perfectly.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Jeanette and Ken Knott of Cove, and Jack and Jerrie Poncy of Cypress, Calif.; a brother, Francis Poncy of Sisters; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and other relatives. Two sons, Russell and Art Poncy; four brothers, Francois, Clair, Henry, Raymond and Lawrence; and a sister, Therese Ford, all died earlier.

Dorla Jean Culver, 72, of Eugene and formerly of La Grande died Feb. 12. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday Feb. 17 at the Summerville Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. at the New Life Center, 10700 Walton Road.

Mrs. Culver was born April 13, 1933, to Arthur and Ada Sinclair Whiteman in La Grande. She graduated from La Grande High School and married Larry Culver. She was a homemaker and lived in La Grande almost all her life. She enjoyed crafts, making clothes for children, telling stories, fishing, hunting, picking mushrooms and huckleberries, a good practical joke and being with her family and friends.

Survivors include children, Lara Nicoson of Pleasant Hill, Michael Culver of La Grande and Donna Miller of Missouri; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; siblings, James, Edward and David Whiteman, Betty Kimball and Linda Rysdam, all of La Grande, and other relatives. Her husband and three sisters, Donna, Nancy and Jenny, all died earlier.

Agnes Doherty Beck, 93, of Meridian, Idaho, and formerly of La Grande, died Feb. 12 in Meridian. A recitation of the rosary will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday Feb. 16 at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Friday Feb. 17 at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Hillcrest East Cemetery.

Mrs. Beck was born Aug. 17, 1912, to Edward and Margery Doherty in New Plymouth, Idaho. On June 9, 1938 she married Maurice Beck in La Grande. Starting in 1932 she taught in rural schools such as Mt. Glen School, for the Elgin School District. and for the Hermiston School District at Sunset School. She retired in 1976. She was recognized for her work with first-grade students.

She was a member of the Catholic Church and a past member of Catholic Daughters, the Oregon Educators Association and the National Educators Association. She enjoyed oil and watercolor painting, writing short stories, cooking and working on the farm.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, David and Anita Beck of Boise, and Maureen and Robert Coon of Nampa, Idaho; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and other relatives. Her husband; a grandson, James Coon; a son, James Beck; four brothers and four sisters all died earlier.

Mary B. Cade Jobes Canfield, 99, of Longview, Wash., and formerly of La Grande died Feb. 12. A celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday Feb. 18 at Gresham Funeral Chapel, 257 S.E. Roberts St. in Gresham with the Rev. DeWayne LaPoint of Ocean Park, Wash., officiating. Burial at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland will be private.

Mrs. Canfield was born Nov 28, 1906, to Fred and Bertha Clark in Akeley, Minn. She graduated from Akeley High School in 1926 and married James Cade the same year. They were divorced in 1937. In 1939 she married Lester Jobes in Spirit Lake, Idaho, and moved to La Grande. She worked for Oderless Dry Cleaners and Grande Ronde Hospital as a cook. She retired in 1971.

She a member of the New Life Center Church were she was part of a ladies missionary group and taught Sunday School. After her husband’s death in 1982, she married Charles Canfield in 1986 in LaGrande. He died in 1998, and in 2001 she moved to a care center.

She enjoyed quilting and won many blue ribbons for crocheted tablecloths and other items at the Union County Fair. She enjoyed flower gardening, quoting poetry, fishing and playing a mouth harp.

Survivors include her children, Lowell Cade of Madras, Floyd Cade of Castle Rock, Wash., Eleanor Ackerman of Gresham, and Mary Hendrick of Longview; step-children, Dennis Jobes of Pilot Rock, and Betty Wood of Tacoma, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. A son, Robert, and seven siblings all died earlier.

Lloyd Cummins Spikes, 90, of Elgin died Feb. 14. At his request there will be no funeral. A celebration of life will be held in spring or summer.

Mr. Spikes was born May 1, 1915, to Lloyd F. and Elva Cummins Spikes in Elgin. He graduated from Union High School, and worked at the Pondosa Lumber Company in Elgin and at occasional carpentry jobs. He served in the Navy during World War II. He established a partnership with Maurice Sherwood, and the two had a small sawmill outside of Enterprise. In the late 1950s he started a construction business, and over the next 24 years, built sawmill and school additions, barns and houses throughout the Grande Ronde Valley.

In August of 1936 he married Florence E. Walter of Touchet, Wash., and moved to Elgin. After her death in 1996 he married Beth Miller in 1998. She died in 2004 and he moved to a care center a month ago.

He was a member of the Elgin City Council for several years, and served three terms as mayor. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and after retiring in 1980, discovered the golf. He was a devoted duffer, and enjoyed many rounds of golf with friends and family.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Carrol and Chuck Turk of Portland, Connie and Tom Flaskerud of Las Vegas, Nev., and Mike and Kristy Spikes of Corvallis; two sisters, Helen Maxwell of Walla Walla, Mary Ann Hazelwood of Ellensburg, Wash.; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Four siblings, Dorothy Faught, Tom Spikes, Jean Weaver and Dale Spikes, all died earlier.

LaVelle A. West, 68, of Bellingham, Wash., and formerly of La Grande died Feb. 14 at his home. A celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21 at Christ the King Church in Bellingham. A reception will follow.

Mr. West was born June 20, 1937, to William Raymond and Bertha Lovely West in La Grande. He graduated from La Grande High School in 1955 and graduated from Washington State University in 1960 with a masters degree in education. He taught and was head football coach at Raymond High School, Raymond, Wash., Placer High School in Auburn, Calif., and at Bellingham High School. He retired in 1998.

Survivors include a companion, Sandra Gurosko; three children and their spouses, LaVelle E. "Butch" and Sharon West, LuCinda L. and Keith Willnauer, and LaMar A. "Marty" and Libby West, all of Bellingham; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Dorotha Voruz of La Grande. His wife, Peggy Ann West, and a brother, Norman, died earlier.
