Lois M. Cable

Elgin

1927-2012

Lois Marie (Spencer) Cable, 85, of Elgin, died Nov. 15 at her home after a lengthy battle with cancer. At the request of her family there will be no public services.

Lois was born Aug. 14, 1927, in McCloud, Okla., to Georgia “Jackie” A. (Pershinger) and Eucle D. Spencer. She graduated from Westport High School in 1946. On June 16, 1946, Lois married Dan Cable in Lewiston, Idaho. They were married until his death in 2004.

Lois loved to hunt, fish, hunt for rocks, feed wildlife and travel. She was a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jackie A. Ferguson and Eucle D. Spencer; husband, Dan Cable; siblings, Berta (Boots) Churchill, Maxine (Haley) Lindsey, Charles (Bud) D. Spencer and Patricia Deardorff.

Survivors include her sister, Betty Pendarus; children, Daniel Cable and Gloria Anthoney; and two grandchildren.

Paula J. Dougharity

Formerly of La Grande

1947-2012

Paula Jean Dougharity, 65, of Baker City and formerly of La Grande, died Nov. 18 in Boise, Idaho. A memorial service will be held at noon Nov. 23 at Gray’s West and Co. Pioneer Chapel in Baker City.

Paula was born May 13, 1947, in Baker City to Paul and Shirley (Doherty) Dougharity. She graduated from La Grande High in 1965 and attended Mt. Hood Community College. Paula was self-employed as a bookkeeper, and in her free time enjoyed gardening, knitting, visiting with loved ones and friends and keeping the IRS in check.

Paula was very proud of being a double Dougharity/Doherty, being a loving and devoted mom and grandmother and raising four children. She had a passion for helping others prepare their taxes and enjoyed bookkeeping. Paula also barrel raced her dapple gray gelding, Bob, in her teens.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Shirley Dougharity.

Survivors include her children, Jerre Jean Neeley of Pendleton, Paul Roe of Pilot Rock, Patrick Dougharity of Colorado and Shawna Patton of Dundee; brother, Patrick Dougharity of Whitefish, Wash.; cousin, Tim Doherty of Burley, Idaho; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and her beloved dog and best friend Max.

Will-Lowe Scott

Will-Lowe Scott, 96, of Cove, died Nov. 15 at a care facility in La Grande. At the request of her family there will be no public services. Interment will be in Fort Jones Cemetery at Fort Jones, Calif. Arrangements are under the direction of Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

Will-Lowe was born Nov. 24, 1915, in Dixon, Mo., to John and Maude (Burnett) Cain. She grew up in Dixon and graduated from Dixon High School. She attended William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Va., for one year. Will-Lowe was married to Rex Veasman Scott, who died Aug. 22, 1990, in California. Will-Lowe enjoyed gardening and crossword puzzles.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a sister, Mildred Riddle.

Survivors include her children, John Scott of Cove, Mella Dea Tocchet of Carmel Valley, Calif., and Rexanna Shackleford of Salem, Mo.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

James Delbert Witherspoon

Formerly of Elgin

1921-2012

James Delbert Witherspoon, 91, of Ventura, Calif., and formerly of Elgin, died Nov. 7. Services were held Nov. 17 in Ventura. Arrangements were under the direction of Ted Mayr Funeral Home.

Known as Delbert, he was born March 23, 1921, in Elgin, the sixth child of James Elvis and Bertha (Witty) Witherspoon. Raised on a farm in Eastern Oregon during the Depression, he attended a one-room schoolhouse on Cricket Flat near Elgin.

After graduating from Elgin High School in 1938, he attended Oregon State University.

In 1949 Delbert met and married Helen Romsos Hohnstein. They lived in Ventura, Calif., then in Downey, Calif., for 21 years, before returning to Ventura. Delbert was a businessman and entrepreneur. He established Ventura Rubbish Service and later Porta-Stor in Ventura County before retiring in 1991.

Delbert was a longtime member of the Lions Club of Ventura.

He was an avid walker and enjoyed his retirement time gardening, following the stock market, traveling and dining out with

friends.

A devoted husband, Delbert took care of his wife, Helen, until her passing in January of this year.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Carol Hohnstein of Springville, Calif., and Grant and Phyllis Witherspoon of Ventura, Calif.; daughter Linda Jewell Witherspoon and fiance Craig McBride of Park City, Utah; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Thelma Doloros Wolford

1932-2012

Thelma Doloros Wolford, 80, died Nov. 18, 2012 at her daughter’s home in Pendleton. A celebration of life will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Elgin Christian Church. Those who wish may make contributions in her memory to the Oregon Cancer Society in care of Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation and Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh St. in La Grande.

Thelma was born on Aug. 5, 1932, the daughter of Floyd and Lucille (Hargan) McMichael in Elkton. She graduated from Oakland High School and on Aug. 7, 1950 she married William Wolford in Yoncolla. They came to Elgin in April of 1967 and she drove school bus for 20 years and also worked as waitress/cook/dishwasher for two restaurants in Elgin and then for her daughter at “Barbie’s Place” in La Grande until she sold it. Thelma was an active member of the Elgin Christian Church and served as their secretary off and on for 40 years. She loved to fish and water ski, ride ATVs and served with her husband as camp hosts at Tamarack Camp Ground for 16 years. She was an avid hunter.

Survivors include her husband, Bill of Elgin; daughter, Barbara Jean Lene of Pendleton; son, Harold Lee Wolford of Union; siblings, Joann Brant of Stockton, California, James Bruce McMichael of Drain and Harry Douglas McMichael of Walla Walla; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her son, William “Bill” Wolford Jr. and her brother, Henry Delbert McMichael.
