Morehead wins Harley Tucker title at Chief Joseph Days

JOSEPH – After four rodeos over the course of two months, the Harley

Tucker Rodeo Series came to an end Saturday night at Chief Joseph Days.

More than 400 contestants competed during the four-day rodeo, battling some of the best rodeo livestock in the business.

Shawn Morehead, with a third-place finish in the saddle bronc with a score of 77, earned the Harley Tucker Award for being the most consistent cowboy at the Union Stockshow, Elgin Stampede, St. Paul Rodeo and Chief Joseph Days.

Morehead is the husband of former EOU volleyball coach Kaki Morehead.

Trevor Knowles of Mount Vernon earned the all-around title with a first-pace finish in steer wrestling with a time of 8.6 seconds and a two-head total of 32.9 seconds in the tie-down roping.

Will Lowe of Canyon, Texas, and Jason Havens of Prineville shared first place in the bareback riding with scores of 83. Each man took home $1,988.82 for his efforts.

Chad Denton’s score of 88 on Razzle Dazzle was enough to take first place in the bull riding, earning him $2,878.50.

Cody Rostocky placed second with a score of 85 and earned $2,206.85 during a week when the bulls looked as though they had something to prove.

In the calf roping, Josh Peek of Pueblo, Colo., had a two-head time of 20.5 seconds to take first place and pocket $1,634.63.

Ryle Smith came in second place with an aggregate time of 21 seconds.

Brenda Mays’ time of 17.17 earned her first place and $2,044.40 in the barrel racing. Whitney Phillips of Ridgefield, Wash., placed second with a final time of 17.40.

In the saddle bronc, Scott Miller was the only rider to earn a score of 80 and made $2,359.80 for his efforts. Jermiah Diffee placed second with a score of 78 and took home $1,809.18.

Luke Brown and Martin Lucero shared first place with Riley and Brady Manor in the team roping.

The two teams had an aggregate time of 11.4 seconds and earned $1,321.69 for the week.

The National Finals Rodeo will be held in Las Vegas starting Dec. 1.

Local athletes compete at national finals

In other rodeo action, Will Hulden of Union is tied for 18th with Stanfield’s Koty Kamm in boys cutting with scores of 211 at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Gillette, Wyo., after Saturday’s go-round.

La Grande’s Rachel Richards is tied for 55th in goat tying with a time of 11.5 seconds.

Devin Robinson of Hermiston is 69th in tie-down roping with a time of 20.1 seconds.
