1928-2012

Evelyn Arlene Wilhelm, age 84, of Imbler, died Sunday at her home. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Summerville Cemetery. Viewing will be held at Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation and Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh St. in La Grande on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. Those who wish may make contributions in her memory to the GRH Hospice. Wilhelm was born on July 8, 1928, the daughter of Vincent Elijah and Louisa (Smith) Paddock in Sweet Home. She graduated from high school in Sweet Home and on June 4, 1947, she married Floyd Henry Wilhelm. She enjoyed being active with the American Legion in Sweet Home. They later lived in Heppner before moving to Imbler in 1963. She worked in the laundry at the Grande Ronde Hospital as well as the Sacajawea Laundromat. She also worked for a time at the Smoke House Restaurant. She enjoyed yard work, especially growing peonies. She cared for the livestock and named each cow they owned. She was known as a helpful neighbor. She loved watching Blazer basketball and wrestling on TV.

Survivors include her children, Henry and Judy Wilhelm, Donna and Lloyd Anthoney and Eunice Wilhelm, all of Imbler; brother, Dan Paddock of Sweet Home; sister, Betty Wilhelm of Heppner; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband in December 1989 and a son, Dennis Wilhelm in November 1990. She was also preceded by siblings, Dean Paddock, Lynn Paddock, Zeldia Darby and Lela Pace.

John Waterman

La Grande

1926-2012

John Tallman Waterman, 85, of La Grande, died at Grande Ronde Hospital on Monday, July 30. His memorial service with military honors will be Thursday, Aug. 2, 6 p.m. at Loveland Funeral Chapel.

John was born Nov. 10, 1926, in Boone, Iowa, to Wright and Ivadelle (Beiter) Waterman. His youth was spent in Boone. He graduated from Olewein High School, and enrolled at the University of Illinois where he received his bachelor’s degree. John spent 20 years serving his country in the U.S. Navy and rose to the rank of lieutenant commander in command of the naval ship, U.S.S. Steinacker. He was also a self-employed tax accountant. John married Patricia Ward, the mother of John’s three children, Steve, Wyatt and Stefani. He was also married to Shirley Waterman and Beverly Waterman.

John enjoyed bird hunting, gardening and hunting. He was an avid collector of circus clown memorabilia. Writing was his hobby. His favorite sports were golf and shooting. He was a member of the N.R.A., the Smithsonian and the Elks. John was also a past treasurer of the Oregon Hunter’s Association.

John is survived by his children and their spouses, Steve and Susie Waterman of Oregon; Wyatt and Carla Waterman of Florida; Stefani Julius-Mosby and her spouse David Mosby of Oregon; a brother Mick Waterman of Wisconsin; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

John F. “Bud” Walker died on June 24, at his home in Baker City. The family will host a luncheon and celebration of Bud’s life on Aug. 4, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Lostine Tavern, Lostine. Douglas Terry

Enterprise

1949-2012

Douglas Ray Terry, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend died Thursday, July 26, in a car accident in Orofino, Idaho. Terry lived in Enterprise.

Known for his friendliness, warm smile and love of bad puns, Terry was born in La Grande, March 11, 1949, to Pearl Alice McCoy and Wallace Stanton Terry. Terry attended high school in Thompson Falls, Mont., where he met his future wife, Carol Ann Pritzkau. The couple married on Oct. 12, 1968, and eventually made their home in Great Falls, Mont., where he ran a successful tent and awning business and custom mattress factory. Through his ingenuity, creativity and hard work, he and his wife built a unique underground home where they raised their three children. Wishing to return to his childhood home, the family moved to Enterprise in 1990.

Terry purchased the historic Burnaugh Building in downtown Enterprise, which he and his wife remodeled and managed. The couple succeeded in adding the building to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. Terry was a community leader as a member of the Wallowa County Arts Council, the Enterprise Community Church, the Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce and the Ford Foundation Leadership Group. He was elected to the Enterprise City Council in 2009.

Terry’s hobbies and interests were many and included glass blowing, coins, antiques, woodcarving, pottery and wind energy. Three of his glass ornaments were displayed on the National Christmas Tree in 2002. Terry was extremely handy, always building something out of nothing, such as a full glassblowing studio and a wind generator. He loved helping his daughters with big projects at their homes. His current project with his wife was to build their retirement home north of Enterprise.

Terry is survived by his wife, Carol; his son, Brent Terry, his daughters Dayna Terry Willms and Shannon Terry Reel, and his four grandchildren; his brothers Gerald Bacon, Stan Terry, Glen Terry, Rick Taylor and his sister Frankie Thamert; and his father Wallace.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, Aug. 3, at 1 p.m. at the Enterprise Community Church.

Stephen Sherwood

Formerly of La Grande

1944-2012

Stephen Howard Sherwood, 67, died Wednesday, July 25, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Graveside services will be held at Hillcrest East Cemetery in La Grande on Thursday Aug. 2, at 11 a.m.

Sherwood was born on Sept. 6, 1944, at the old Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande to Loren E. Sherwood and Bessie L. (Manning) Sherwood. He was a few weeks old when the family moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, and later to Lewiston, Mont., where he grew up and attended school.

The family later returned to La Grande, where he married Judith Ann Longacre on March 17, 1969. They made their home in Ontario, where they raised their four children. They later divorced. Steve worked at various jobs and then started his own photography business. He liked to cook, play his guitar and listen to country western music.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He is survived by his former wife, Judy Sherwood; his children Michelle Phelps, Andrew Sherwood, Sharon Sherwood, Keith Sherwood; his sister Donna Wilson; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Donna Amos

Island City

1937-2012

Donna Lee Amos, 74, of Island City, died at a local care facility in La Grande on Monday, July 30. Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 4, 5 p.m. at Loveland Funeral Chapel.

Donna was born Dec. 28, 1937, in Prairie City to her parents John Henry and Reta Mae (Burnside) Stussie. She grew up in Long Creek where she attended school. After graduation in 1955, she enrolled at the Portland College of Beauty, receiving her license in 1957. She was a hair stylist in Long Creek, Burns and La Grande. In 1974, Donna was employed with Boise Cascade where she worked for 26 years until 2000 when she retired. Donna married twice, first with Jerry Martin and second with Cliff Amos.

Donna enjoyed cooking. She loved making pies. She was always in the mood to pick huckleberries. She enjoyed camping and loved to fish. She loved rodeos and seldom missed the Pendleton Round Up. Donna’s favorite sport was volleyball, which was her specialty. She was a volunteer at the Grande Ronde Hospital Auxiliary and at the foot clinic. She was also a member of the Eagles Lodge.

Donna is survived by her children, Ray Martin and his wife Paula, of Long Creek; Randy Amos of La Grande, stepson Rick Amos of Arizona, two sisters, Lola Chapman of La Grande and Ruth Rodarme and her spouse Dan of Kent, Wash.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kim Fisher and her parents.

Grant Saunders

Cove

1924-2012

Grant K. Saunders, 87, of Cove, died on Sunday, July 29, in the Grande Ronde Hospital. His celebration of life will be on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2 p.m. at Loveland Funeral Chapel.

Grant was born Aug. 21, 1924, in Cove. His parents were Hezekiah “Mac” Saunders and Sarah Almarine Gardner Saunders. He grew up in Cove, where he attended school, graduating from Cove High School. He enrolled at Eastern Oregon University and received his bachelor’s degree. He worked at several occupations including insurance salesman, real estate broker, teacher, millworker and carpenter. Grant served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was married twice, first to Phyllis Jane Robinson who died Aug. 12, 2007. His second marriage was to Betty J. Walker.

Grant enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He raised horses and enjoyed horseback riding. He liked blackjack, the National Finals Rodeo, traveling and pleasure driving. He also enjoyed going mushrooming and huckleberry picking with his family. His favorite sports were golf, baseball and basketball. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Surviving are his wife, Betty; his children and their spouses, Jack and Cathie Saunders of New Meadows, Idaho; Tim and Debbie Saunders of Middleton, Idaho; Shelley and Randy Simmons of La Grande; Linda and Jim Hermann of Vancouver, Wash.; Rodney and Sharon Walker of La Grande; Michael Walker of Vancouver, Wash.; Ken Walker of Oregon City; Barbara and Richard Burton of Elk River, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and 13 nieces and nephews.
