At 12, Frank died, and two years later, Lorna married Bernard Streeter, the stepfather who finished raising Cliff. He spent his young years working in logging camps until the family moved to Dayville in 1940 and built a home there.

Cliff graduated at the top of his class from Dayville High School in 1945 and entered the Army soon after. He served as an MP in Company D, 701st Military Police Battalion in San Francisco at Lompoc, Calif., and was honorably discharged in 1951.
