- DECORATING STALLS: EOLS queen candidates Kymee Braseth, left, and Gabrielle Schmittle prepare and decorate the stalls for their horses Monday afternoon at the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show grounds in Union. Braseth and Schmittle, along with Jessica Hafer, who was not present for this photo, are competing for the title of EOLS queen. The queen will be crowned Thursday night based on speech, horsemanship and ticket sales. The girls competed in horsemanship Sunday. 4-H activities started Monday and continue through the week. The annual parade will be held at 2 p.m. Friday with rodeo and racing starting at 4 p.m. Friday. - Photo/AMBER GLAZE
If you’re seeing an unusual amount of western wear on the streets these days or catching whiffs of rawhide on the passing breeze, it can only mean one thing: The Eastern Oregon Livestock Show is back in action.
Now marking its 101st go-round -last year’s 100th anniversary was well celebrated -the show, which began this week in Union, is one of the oldest, continuously-running rodeos in the country.
This year’s program, which begins a new century of tradition, features the PRCA rodeo, pari-mutuel horse-racing, 4-H and FFA livestock exhibits, western art displays, dances, a parade and other celebrations.
Events began Sunday with the queen horsemanship contest. The 4-H Horse Show started Monday and continues today.
The 2008 EOLS will also feature grand marshals Ron and Dorothy Titus and queen candidates Kymee Braseth, Imbler, and Jessica Hafer and Gabrielle Schmittle, both of La Grande, with Heidi Denton performing chaperone duties.
Those purchasing tickets from the EOLS court save two dollars off the gate price. Orders may be placed with Braseth (963-7620 or 910-9008), Hafer (962-7588 or 910-5988) or Schmittle (786-5250).
This year’s officers include President Ray McDaniel, First Vice President Luke Shaw, Second Vice President Darren Hansen, Third Vice President Nate Jacob, Secretary Jo Ann Hefner and Treasurer Stacey Brudevold.
