Archie Clinton Dunsmoor, 84, of Eugene and formerly of La Grande died June 9. A remembrance gathering took place July 22 in Eugene.

Archie was born on March 6, 1923, to Lloyd and Wave Daugherty Dunsmoor in Portland. He married Shirley Petersdorf on Sept. 18, 1944, in Miami Beach, Fla.

Dunsmoor served as a naval officer in World War II with the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Western Oregon University and a master’s degree from University of Oregon. Archie worked as a teacher and coach for 41 years at Redmond elementary and high schools and later worked at Eastern Oregon University and at Consumnes River College in Sacramento until retiring.

Survivors include a son, Wally, of British Columbia, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

His wife preceded him in death on Feb. 2, 1992.

Derease "Dee" Bones, 80, of Reedsport and formerly of Union, died July 24 at Reedsport Lower Umpqua Extended Care Hospital of complications related to breast cancer. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Elks Wapiti Park up Drift Creek in Lincoln City.

Derease was born Oct. 16, 1926, to Flossie May (Gaylor) and Benton Starkey in Cassville, Mo. She was the seventh of nine children. She was raised in Cassville and graduated from Cassville High School in 1946. She worked as a candy striper in high school.

Derease moved to Hopewell in 1947 and went to work for General Hospital in McMinnville as a nurse’s aide. She met Robert Bones while he was in the hospital and they married on Jan. 7, 1949, in McMinnville. They raised their family in Lincoln City. She worked at North Lincoln Hospital for 18 years as a nurse’s aide until her retirement.

Derease liked to hunt, fish, camp and dig clams with her family. She enjoyed her grandchildren and made each one a quilt. After she and her husband retired, they traveled south to Arizona to be one of the state’s "snowbirds" for 18 years. They met many people from all over and made strong friendships in Arizona. When their travels ended due to health problems, they settled for a couple of years in La Grande then moved to the Oregon Coast, where they lived for the past three years.

Derease is survived by her husband, Robert, of Reedsport; sons, Ammon "Pete" and his wife, Joy, of Vancouver, Wash., Ben and his wife, Cindy, of Otis, Bob and his wife, Anita, of Union and Jeffrey of Lincoln City; daughter, Linda Poage and her significant other, Ed Kosack, of Reedsport; sisters, Marcella Long of Joplin, Mo., Colleen Hensen, of Ridley, Mo., and Doogie Harvey of Cassville. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dunes Memorial Chapel in Reedsport is in charge of arrangements.

Grace Edvalson, 99, of Richland, Wash., died July 23 at the home of her granddaughter, Hope Houck in Richland. A funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Union Ward Chapel in Union. Visitation will be held before the service from 11 to noon in the cultural hall of the church. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery.

Grace was born Nov. 10, 1907, to Caroline Jensen Halling and Peter Jorgensen Halling in Cove. In 1909, she and her family moved to Union, where she spent most of her life. From 1939 to 1946, she lived in Baker City before returning to Union.

She attended the old North School, the South School and graduated from Union High School in 1925. She enrolled at the University of Utah in 1927 and went on to graduate from Eastern Oregon Normal School in the first graduating class of 1930.

Grace was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in callings in the Primary Children’s Organization, the Women’s Relief Society Organization and the Young Women’s Organization of the church.

In 1937, she married Herman M. Edvalson in Union at her parents’ home. They were sealed three months later in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Grace was an avid gardener and an excellent cook, as well as both a student and teacher of literature, especially Shakespeare.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Hill, and husband Robert of Canoga Park, Calif., Kathleen Edvalson Almquist of Union and Anne Thrower and husband Rick of Rockingham, N.C.; son, Lars Edvalson and wife Winona of Richland, Wash. She had 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She also leaves a sister-in-law, Ada Dungan of Orangeville, Calif., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and four sisters.

Phyllis Knight, 70, of La Grande, died July 26 at her home. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Viewing will be held from 9 a.m. until noon at Daniels Chapel. Burial will follow at the Hillcrest Cemetery.

Phyllis was born May 15, 1937, to Guy Addney and Donna Belle (Reed) Shepherd in Burns. She was one of 16 children. She attended school in Hines. On July 18, 1953, she married James Parsons. They later divorced. In 1973, she moved to La Grande and worked in the housekeeping department of Grande Ronde Hospital for 30 years before her retirement at age 66. On May 21, 1977, she married Dewey George Knight in La Grande. He preceded her in death on April 24, 1996.

Phyllis was a quiet, simple person who loved working at the hospital and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed Yahtzee.

Survivors include her children, Robert Parsons, Gary Parsons and Sandra Parsons, all of La Grande, and Belinda Rodriguez of Idaho; brothers and their wives, Clifford and Barb Shepherd of Sacramento, Calif., Leo Shepherd of Burns, Douglas and Karen Shepherd of Hillsboro and Gaylord and Joy Shepherd of Lincoln City; sister and her husband, Janice and Ernie Spurgeon of Hines; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and other relatives. She was preceded in death by sons John Leroy Parsons and James Wesley Parsons Jr., and great-grandson Drake Parsons.

Mary A. Rost, 63, of La Grande died July 24 of natural causes. A celebration of life will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 1308 Washington Ave., La Grande.

Mary was born Jan. 11, 1944, to John F. and Agnes M. (Haney) Dorsch in Stevens Point, Wis. She was raised in Redmond and graduated from Redmond High School in 1962. In 1966, she earned her bachelor of arts degree in biology from Willamette University. There she met her husband, Kenneth D. Rost, and they married that year.

She received her teaching credentials from Portland State University and taught eighth grade in Lake Oswego from 1966 to 1970. Ken and Mary lived in various places while Ken finished his medical degree, before settling in

La Grande in 1978. Once in La Grande, Mary dedicated her time to her family and to managing the household. She also worked part-time at Sunflower Books and was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church.

Mary’s hobbies included horseback riding, fishing, camping and music. She especially enjoyed riding horses with her family, friends and the cowgirls of the Women’s Oregon Trail Riders. She also loved spending time with her family at Wallowa Lake.

Survivors include her sons and their spouses, Jeff and Tiffanie Rost of Adams and Brian and Jennifer Rost of Lolo, Mont.; two grandchildren; two brothers, John Dorsch of Pueblo, Colo., and Tony Dorsch of Redmond. She was preceded in death by her mother, father and husband.

The Rost Family wishes to thank everyone who gave their love and support to Mary over the past 19 years as she battled with cancer. Whether it was preparing meals for her, performing chores at the house, traveling with her to doctor appointments or simply keeping her company, there was always someone willing to help.

Fred W. Kinnick, 81, of La Grande, died July 25 at Grande Ronde Hospital. The family has requested that no services be held. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Fred was born on May 12, 1926, to William and Lupe Kinnick in Livingston, Mont. He married Jackie Donaldson on Nov. 2, 1959, in Las Vegas, and served in World War II. He worked in logging and concrete until his retirement. He also lived in Hermiston.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, Katie and Ron Ledbetter of

La Grande, John and Jean Kinnick of La Grande, Karen and Lee Palin of Montana, Carol and Rich Felton of Montana and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and his son, Wally.
