The Elgin Dental Clinic is now open for business.

The clinic, which is operated by Dr. Eli Mayes, hosted an open house Monday at the Elgin Health Clinic at 1400 Division St.

The clinic is fully equipped with two chairs and state-of-the-art equipment to offer full spectrum dentistry services, including extractions, oral surgeries, X-rays, root canals, periodontal surgeries and care, dentures, crown and bridge work, general fillings and sealants for children.

NEOAHEC hosting brain awareness teleconference

The Northeast Oregon Area Health Education Center will host its annual Brain Awareness teleconference on March 8 on campus at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.

The cost to participate is $15. Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m. March 8. The simulcast starts at 10 a.m. at Inlow Hall.

“It is broadcasted from Oregon Health Science University and their Brain Institute, and it’s geared for educators, health care professionals and community members,” said Meredith Lair, associate director with NEOAHEC at EOU. “This particular conference is about ‘Transforming Students’ Motivation to Learn.'”

The presenter of this material is Dr. Carol S. Dweck from the Department of Psychology at Stanford University. Dweck is renowned in the field of social psychology and developmental psychology. Dweck graduated from Barnard College in 1967 and earned a doctorate from Yale in 1972. Before joining the faculty at Stanford in 2004, Dweck taught at Columbia University, Harvard University and the University of Illinois.

Light morning snacks and coffee will be provided. The program concludes after the QandA session around noon. Certificates for two professional development units will be handed out to all attendees at the close of the sessions.

Growing through Grief

support group starts March 6

The Growing through Grief support group, a free series, meets weekly from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning March 6 and running through April 24 at the First Presbyterian Church, 1308 Washington.

The group is sponsored by Grande Ronde Hospital Hospice and facilitated by Teresa Smith-Dixon, LCSW.

Doctor to visit preschool as part of dental health month

Dr. James McMahan will visit Heidi Ho preschool and kindergarten classes Thursday as part of National Children’s Dental Health Month.

He and his staff will give presentations to students about the importance of oral health and developing good habits at an early age. They will join both morning and afternoon classes.

National Children’s Dental Health Month is recognized each February and is sponsored by the American Dental Association.
