- UPDATE: Micah West captured in Albany
A late-night hunger attack proved to be the downfall for one of the two juveniles who escaped from the Oregon Youth Authority’s Camp Riverbend Transitional Facility last month.
Micah West was detained around midnight Wednesday by the Albany Police Department for shoplifting candy bars, according to a press release from the Oregon State Police. Officers determined he had an active warrant for his arrest and booked him into Linn County Jail.
West was later transferred to the OYA’s MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn to await disposition, according to the state police.
OSP Sgt. Kyle Hove said West may face charges for his escape from OYA’s Camp Riverbend Youth Transition Facility as well as other law violations allegedly committed after his escape.
West escaped with Brittain McAulliffe, shortly before 8 p.m. June 20, when they stole a slide card from the facility and walked out the front gate. The escape was the first from Riverbend since 2008, according to OYA officials.
There were reported sightings in Meacham following their escape and OSP troopers thought the two might be in the old Blue Mountain Lounge building on the south edge of Meacham on the morning of June 21. Law enforcement officers surrounded the building but found nobody inside.
It is believed that one or both youths stole an Oregon Parks and Recreation vehicle on June 24 from Emigrant Springs State Heritage Area, 28 miles northwest of La Grande. The theft took place after someone stole the car keys from a nearby park building, according to the Oregon State Police. The vehicle contained a small amount of cash, multiple power tools, hand tools and safety equipment.
McAuliffe was reportedly spotted at a Milton-Freewater pharmacy later on June 24.
West was originally referred to OYA in August 2014 on a charge of possession of methamphetamine.
