Students from the ODS Dental Hygiene School are looking forward to a busy time during their upcoming humanitarian trip to Honduras.
Debra James, the school’s executive director and a dental hygienist herself, said that during their two-week stay, the students expect to treat 500 patients.
They will provide cleanings and preventive treatment for adults and children in the Opimuca area of Honduras.
They will also assist Honduran dentists who have volunteered to provide more in-depth restorative services.
"This trip will provide great experience for our students, and we are pleased to be able to help people who are in dire need of dental care," James said.
The trip, slated for Oct. 6-21, was organized by Northwest Medical Teams.
While some financial assistance was provided by several Eastern Oregon dentists, James and the students are paying for most of the airfare costs themselves.
Dental supplies have been donated by The ODS Companies and Burkhart Dental Supply.
