JOSEPH — On Tuesday, Feb. 1, at noon, one of Wallowa County’s newest residents, John Frohnmayer, will be the featured speaker at the Josephy Center’s virtual Brown Bag.

A retired attorney and former chairman of Oregon Humanities and director of the National Endowment for the Arts, Frohnmayer will talk about his passions, philosophy and sport.

Frohnmayer came to Wallowa County with his skis and his single rowing scull — and his golf clubs.

He’s written a book about each sport and some aspect of philosophy: golf and ethics, skiing and mysticism.

“Rowing, and especially competitive rowing,” he said, “teaches us about teamwork, community, courage, steadfastness, and a host of other qualities that have been the subject of philosophical musing for all of recorded history.”

In COVID times, the Josephy Center is producing its Brown Bag lecture series online via Zoom.

The programs are still free for all participants and include the opportunity to question and talk with the presenters.
