LA GRANDE — A social media post by a La Grande High School student Friday, Dec. 1, caught the attention of school administrators and law enforcement.

The post, made around 8 a.m. Dec. 1, contained a bomb threat. Administrators at the high school became aware of the threat around 9 a.m. and took immediate action, according to La Grande School District Superintendent George Mendoza. Within minutes the school district had secured the student, evacuated the classroom and notified law enforcement of the threat.

“Law enforcement response was handled by the on-site school resource officers,” La Grande Police Chief Gary Bell said. “It was all handled internally very quickly and determined to be not serious, but we take it very seriously.”

Law enforcement responded to the high school and conducted a search of the area, the student and their residence. At 9:30 a.m., high school administration and law enforcement said the area was safe for students and staff to return and that there was no remaining threat to student and staff safety.

After the school was cleared, the student was disciplined, cited for disorderly conduct and referred to the Union County Juvenile Department, according to a message on the school district’s website.

It is important for students to understand that their words and actions have impacts, Mendoza said. The school, community and law enforcement take every threat seriously.

Support and mental health services are available for any student who needs them, Mendoza said.
