LA GRANDE — This year potentially will be a big election year for the La Grande City Council with four terms expiring on Dec. 31.
The mayoral seat, along with three city councilor positions, are up for election. La Grande mayors serve two-year terms, while councilors’ terms are for four years.
Mayor Justin Rock took office in 2023, replacing outgoing Mayor Steve Clements, who opted not to run for reelection after serving four consecutive terms since his election in 2014.
Position 2, Position 3 and Position 4 on the council are all up for election. Position 2 is currently held by Nicole Howard, Position 3 by David Glabe and Position 4 Mary Ann Miesner. These councilors were elected to their current positions in 2020 and took office in 2021.
All candidates — incumbents included — must complete the nomination process, according to La Grande City Recorder Stacey Stockhoff.
If only one or two candidates file for a position, those candidates automatically will be placed on the Nov. 5 general election ballot. However, if three or more residents file for a particular position. a primary election will be held on May 21 to nominate candidates.
In order to be eligible for the primary election, candidates must have resided within the city of La Grande during the six months prior to May 21.
Potential candidates must collect the signatures of at least 20 registered voters who live in La Grande. Complete petitions need to be filed in the city recorder’s office at La Grande City Hall, 1000 Adams Ave., no later than 1 p.m. March 12.
After forms are dropped off with the city, Stockhoff said they are taken to the county for signature verification. Once verified the information becomes publicly available.
