LA GRANDE — The Union County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to be on the lookout for a new scam affecting the community.
Multiple community members reported receiving a call from the non-emergency line and being told there was a warrant out for their arrest, according to a new release posted to the department’s social media page. The scammer is using names of people at the Union County Sheriff’s Office and sounds very believable.
The sheriff’s office wants to remind residents that their department would never inform you about a warrant over the phone and no law enforcement agency would ask you to take cash out of your account to pay for bail, according to the release.
If there is any doubt about the legitimacy of a caller, the department recommends hanging up and independently verifying if it was someone from the sheriff’s office by calling the non-emergency line directly at 541-963-1017. Do not call 911.
If the situation does not feel right, do not give out your personal information.
