LA GRANDE — A Washington man involved in a high-speed car chase in October had pleaded guilty and been sentenced in Union County Circuit Court, La Grande.
Tino Sabala, 46, pleaded guilty to felony fleeing and recklessly endangering another person, according to Oregon public records. Union County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Powers convicted Sabala on both charges on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
Oregon State Police arrested Sabala Oct. 19 following a pursuit that began on Interstate 84 and ended on Highway 237.
Oregon State Police Trooper Charles Rohlf noticed a vehicle traveling at high speeds in the westbound lane of I-84, according to the probable cause document. He checked the speed and found the car was traveling at 116 mph. Rohlf turned on his lights and sirens, but Sabala did not stop.
The pursuit entered La Grande as Sabala took Exit 261, according to Oregon public records. He turned right on Island Avenue and at times drove into oncoming traffic. Rohlf pursued Sabala as the pursuit passed into Island City. Sabala got on Highway 237 outside the city limits of Island City.
Near Pierce Road, Sabala made a U-turn before pulling in behind two vehicles that were stopped along the shoulder due to the emergency lights, according to the probable cause declaration.
Rohlf pulled into the ongoing lane and Sabala pulled back onto the road. He reportedly accelerated toward Rohlf before swerving left at the last moment. Rohlf turned into the driver’s side of the vehicle, which damaged both cars and prevented Sabala from accelerating away. Sabala was taken into custody and lodged in Union County Jail.
He was indicted by a Union County Grand Jury on felony fleeing, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, trafficking in a vehicle with either a destroyed or altered vehicle identification number and second-degree criminal mischief.
Powers sentenced Sabala to 90 days in county jail for felony fleeing and 10 days for recklessly endangering another person, according to Oregon public records. The two sentences will run consecutively. Sabala will receive credit for time served. Powers dismissed the other charges.
Upon his release, Sabla will undergo one year of post-prison supervision, according to the public record. If he violates any of the conditions of his supervision, Sabala will be subject to sanctions, which include the possibility of additional imprisonment.
Sabala was represented by court-appointed counsel, La Grande attorney J. Logan Joseph.
