College track & field: Three Mountaineers earn All-American Status at NAIA National Championships

BROOKINGS, S.D. — The Eastern Oregon University men’s and women’s track & field programs competed admirably at the NAIA National Championships this weekend in Brookings, South Dakota.
The Mountaineers saw three athletes earn All-American Honors, while several athletes also moved up in the program record book for their respective events. As a team, Eastern Oregon placed 38th on the men’s side with seven points.
Thrower Tanner Nett had another impressive showing, earning All-America status for the second straight indoor season. In the shot put, he threw 16.65 meters to earn a sixth-place finish.
In the men’s heptathlon, Judson Mansfield earned All-America honors by placing eighth with a score of 4,822 points. Mansfield’s top performance came in the shot put, where he threw 11.50 meters to place fourth. He placed sixth in the pole vault at 4.25 meters, seventh in high jump at 1.81 meters, seventh in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:51.03, and eighth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.74.
Eastern Oregon continued to impress in the throws, as Mark Church earned a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw to conclude the indoor season as an All-American. Church launched the weight 18.42 meters, a mark that is second all time in the program’s record book.
In the women’s 4×800 meter relay, Eastern Oregon’s time of 9:38.38 was good for a new program record. The relay team consisted of Mattie Woodbury, Madelyn Nichols, Riley Morris, and Lauryn Mitchell.
Elizabeth Grandle competed admirably in the women’s pentathlon, coming up just one spot shy of All-American status. She earned 3,353 points to place ninth. Her best event was the shot put, which she won with a throw of 11.77 meters.
Justin Ash competed well in the distance events, placing 13th in the 5,000 meters with a personal-record time of 14:46.97. The time is second all time in the Eastern Oregon record book. In the 3,000 meter finals, Ash recorded a personal record time of 8:28.20 place ninth overall in the event.
In the women’s hammer throw, Kenna Woodward placed ninth with a throw of 17.27 meters. She finished one spot shy of All-America status.
Osman Osman, the school’s record holder in the 400 meters, clocked in at 48.26 seconds to place 14th in the prelims.
High jumper Tyler Jones came up just one spot short of All-American Honors. He cleared 2.05 meters, but placed ninth due to the amount of attempts it took him to clear the height.
Grandle also competed well in the women’s high jump, placing 14th after clearing a height of 1.60 meters.
Coming off the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships, the Mountaineers will now shift their focus toward the outdoor season. The Mountaineers open the season at the PNW Invite in Corvallis and the Rich Allen Classic in Newberg on March 16.
