College women’s lacrosse: Mountaineers fall at home to Corban

LA GRANDE — The Eastern Oregon University women’s lacrosse program dropped its home matchup against Corban by a score of 20-7 on Saturday, March 16.

The Mountaineers dropped to 0-7 on the season.

The game started on a high note for Eastern Oregon, as Maddy Woodruff scored the opening goal at the 14:16 mark to take an early lead. Corban responded with four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 advantage. Woodruff scored again in the first period, but Corban added two more to hold a 6-2 advantage after the first frame.

Corban opened up the second quarter with two straight goals, before Claie Bever scored off an assist from Red Pratt to cut the deficit to 8-3. The Warriors scored four straight, before Saydee Hetrickended the run with 3:03 left in the first half. Corban scored with nine seconds remaining in the half, holding a 13-4 advantage at halftime.

Corban’s Sydney Davis opened up the second half with an unassisted goal at the 14:03 mark, before Bever answered back at the 11:19 mark. Less than a minute after, Jade McCoy scored for Eastern Oregon to cut Corban’s lead to 14-6. The Warriors responded with a 4-0 run, before Natalie Vanderploeg scored the final goal of the period — Corban led 18-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was low-scoring, as Corban added two more late goals to walk off with a 20-7 victory over Eastern Oregon.

The Mountaineers totaled 19 shots on the day and forced 17 turnovers. Woodruff led Eastern Oregon with six shots on goal, while Hetrick and McCoy each had three. Sydney Vopat recorded eight saves in goal.

Up next, Eastern Oregon will travel to Montreat, North Carolina to face off against Montreat College on March 25. The game is set to being at 1 p.m. PT.
