Cecil Mae Bailey

Cecil Mae Bailey, 84, a long-time resident of Wallowa County, died Oct. 25 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital.

A funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise.

Mrs. Bailey was born Dec. 10, 1916, in John Day to Harry and Myrtle McKern of Mount Vernon. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School, where she met Bill Bailey. The two were married in 1939 in Lewiston.

They moved to Joseph in 1947. Mrs. Bailey belonged to Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and Beta Sigma Phi. She was an organizer of the Order of Rainbow for Girls in Joseph and was the organizations first mother adviser.

She moved to Imnaha in the early 1960s. She enjoyed music, flowers and her family. Her niece, Lana, and her husband, Bill, had been her caregivers for the past two years.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Harryette and Erle Anderson of Albany; a brother-in-law, George Justice of Enterprise; sister-in-law, Lola Jacobs of John Day; several nieces and nephews, including Lana and J.R. Arnold of Imnaha; and many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Two sisters, Dorothy C. Justice and Dallie Lee Reinertson, died earlier.

Melvin Edwin Mel Fischer, 64, of La Grande, died Oct. 27 at his home.

A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley with Sally Wiens officiating.

Mr. Fischer was born on June 5, 1937, the son of Edwin and Louise (Neu) Fischer in Herreid, S.D. He was educated in South Dakota and served with the United States Air Force Strategic Command. In February of 1969 he moved to La Grande from Glenns Ferry, Idaho. He worked as a salesman at Blue Mountain Auto Parts.

Mr. Fischer was a member of the La Grande Country Club and a former member of the La Grande Eagles Lodge. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching ball games and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, Jim of Ontario; sons and daughters-in-law Terry and Shelly Fischer of La Grande; Rick and Lorri Fischer of Enterprise; four grandchildren; one brother; six sisters; and other relatives.

Eunice Asenith Busch, 97, of Union County, died Oct. 27 at a local care center. The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Island City Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will follow at Cove Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Busch was born March 7, 1904, to Royal David and Bernice Comstock Jones in Cove. She attended schools in Cove, Union, Island City and Hilgard and married Ernest C. Busch on Nov. 9, 1924, in La Grande. She was a member of the LDS church and enjoyed crocheting, reading, cooking, baking, camping and fishing.

Survivors include her sister, Evelyn Hagey of La Grande; nieces and nephews, Larry Howard of Portland, Bernice Webster, Sheldon Strand and Richard Strand, all of La Grande, and Rosalie Ruff of Kennewick; seven honorary grandchildren and 10 honorary great-grandchildren.

Her husband and two sisters, Alice Strand and Mildred George, all died earlier.

Geraldine Johnson Kopp, 98, of Elgin, died Oct. 28 at her home. A celebration of life will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the Vineland Cemetery in Clarkston, Wash.

Mrs. Kopp was born July 5, 1903, to Etta and J.W. Johnson on Alder Slope. She married Russell Blevans in Joseph, and after a divorce she married John Kopp on Feb. 24, 1934.

She enjoyed camping, fishing, flowers and visiting her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her grandchildren, Sandra Eckstein and Lance Wilson of Elgin, Debra Sayre, Terria Tucker and Connie Tucker, all of Salem; her companion and care-giver, Heidi Purcell of Elgin; 14 great-grandchildren, 28 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild; and other relatives.

Her husband John, a daughter, Connie, a grandchild, John Wilson, and a brother, Claire Johnson, all died earlier.

Linda Jo See, 60, of La Grande and formerly of Union, died at her home after a long illness. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. A graveside service will follow at the Union Cemetery.

Mrs. See was born May 31, 1941, to Richard and LaVelle Hogoboom Van Houten in Portland. She attended school in Union and married Storm See on Dec. 15, 1960, in Asotin, Wash. After a divorce in 1970, she returned to Union and worked as a bartender. Then in 1982 she moved to Boise. She returned to La Grande in 1985 to care for her mother. She was a Girl Scouts leader and a volunteer at the public schools. She enjoyed wood burning, painting, metal detecting, finding treasures at auctions and yard sales, and spending time with family.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Desiree See and Mark Loree; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a stepgranddaughter; her mother, LaVelle Harris of La Grande, and stepmother, Lelia Van Houten of Wilsonville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Chris Harris of Marsing, Idaho, and Robert and Norma Van Houten of Richland, Wash., and other relatives. Her father and her stepfather, Paul Harris, died earlier.

Daniel Phillips

La Grande

Daniel Webster Phillips, 88, of La Grande, died Oct. 30 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., with Pastor Frank Wiens of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Viewing will be from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Mr. Phillips was born June 2, 1913, to Daniel A. and Minnie E. Good Phillips in

La Grande. He graduated from La Grande High School, and on May 13, 1933, he married Lenda Evelyn Wiles in Baker City. After her death, he married Ellen Muilenburg on April 5, 1987, in La Grande.

He was a farmer and rancher, built homes and dealt in antiques. He was a lifelong member of the La Grande Mavericks, a member of the Cattlemens Association and a former member of the Eagles Lodge. He was involved in the livestock auction and with Kramer Auction, and drove teams of horses in local parades for many years. He loved horses, and enjoyed his pets and telling stories.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and JoAnne Phillips of Quincy, Wash., several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and other relatives including his niece Sheri Rayburn of La Grande. Both wives, his daughter, Darlene Scott Reese, and a half-sister, Zoe Carpenter, all died earlier.

John Shepherd

John William Shepherd, 89, of Shady Cove and formerly of La Grande, died Oct. 28 at his home. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Hillcrest East Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Schlessman of the First Christian Church officiating. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today.

Mr. Shepherd was born Nov. 11, 1911, to Fred and Louise Ransdall Shepherd in Portland. He graduated from La Grande High School and served in the Navy during World War II. He married Elizabeth Jennings on Oct. 10, 1943, in San Diego. He owned a bowling alley during the 1940s and 50s and later worked for Eagle Truck and Machinery until his retirement.

Four months ago the couple moved to Shady Cove to be near family. He was a champion bowler and enjoyed hunting, fishing and sports.

Survivors include his wife of Shady Cove; children and their spouses, John and Marie Shepherd of The Dalles, and Ann Elizabeth and Jeff Mecklenburg of Shady Cove; several grandchildren; a sister, Clara Fisher of Helena, Mont.; and other relatives.

James Benedict, 74, of Union died Oct. 30 at his home. At his request, there will be no public service. Burial will be in New York state.

Mr. Benedict was born March 6, 1927, to Luscion L. and Marion Gellette Benedict in Indianapolis. He attended schools in Batavia, N.Y., and served in the Navy and Air Force from 1943 to 1965. He came to Union in 1985.

Survivors include his brother and caretaker Benjamin S. Benedict of Union, brothers John Benedict of Massachusetts and William Benedict of North Carolina, and a sister, Mary Ann Cook of Minnesota.

Ruth Viola Caton, 96, of La Grande, died Oct. 29 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A private family service will be held later. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Caton was born June 11, 1905, to William and Hulda Stephens Callahan in Burr Oak, Kan. She married Glenn L. Caton on Nov. 21, 1948, in Montana. She was an apartment manager in Tigard and moved to La Grande in July. She enjoyed traveling in her RV and spent winters in Arizona. She liked doing yard work, shopping and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Ona Smith of Sumpter, and a daughter, Carla Smith of Tigard, four grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Two sisters and three brothers died earlier.

Dee Harn

Margie Dee Harn, 63, of Union, died Nov. 1 at her home. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery.

Mrs. Harn was born July 31, 1938, to George and Maxine Erwin Kirkland in Union. She graduated from Union High School in 1956, and in September of that year she married Darrell Harn in Union. The couple moved to California and returned to Union in 1970. She worked as an insurance agent for Baum Insurance and later for Valley Insurance until her retirement a year ago. She was the secretary for the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show for many years and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of Union; children, Diane Harn of Kennewick, Wash., and Clayton Harn of Boring; two grandsons; her brothers, Roger Kirkland of North Powder and David Kirkland of Summerville; her sisters, Faye Carlson of Elgin, Marilyn Weatherbie of Bountiful, Utah, and Iola Irvin of Union; and other relatives. Her parents died earlier.

Mrs. Cooper was born Dec. 10, 1949, to Alfred and Leora Perrine in La Grande. She graduated from La Grande High School in 1968 and married Dennis Cooper in

La Grande. She worked for The Observer and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, reading, music and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband of Weiser; children, Alan Emery of Casa Grande, Ariz., Jody Henry of Mesa, Ariz., and Adam Cooper of Seattle; several grandchildren; her mother Leora McBroom of Weiser; two sisters, Gail Atwood of La Grande and LeeAnne Clark of Albany. Her father, her stepfather, B.S. McBroom, and a brother, Mike Perrine, all died earlier.

Florence Wilhelmina Hart, 100, of Enterprise died Nov. 1. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, with Jerry Raedeke officiating.

Mrs. Hart was born July 11, 1901, to Hugh and Bertha Selwinder Vance in Rapid City, S.D. She married Arthur Hart on Oct. 21, 1920, in South Dakota. She was a homemaker and moved to Enterprise from Bonners Ferry.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Hart of Spokane, Wash., and a daughter, Patricia Snively of Enterprise; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Her husband died earlier.

Patrick Mortier

Patrick Albert Mortier, 86, of Meridian, Idaho, and formerly of La Grande, died Friday at a Boise hospital after a brief illness.

He made his home at a assisted living center in Meridian for the past four years.

There will be no public services. Inurnment will be at a later date in the family plot at a cemetery in La Grande. Chapel of the Chimes in Meridian is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mortier was born April 13, 1915, in La Grande, to Evo and Octavie Mortier. After serving in the Army Air Corp, he made his home in Walla Walla, where he met his wife of more than 50 years, Edith B. Mortier.

He was a cook at the Veterans Hospital for more than 30 years before retiring in 1976.

He was a member of St. Patricks Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Julie Mortier of Valparaiso, Ind.; two stepdaughters, Betty Schmidt of Meridian, and Barbara McCormick of Oklahoma, City, Okla.; seven grandchildren; six great-granddaughters; four great- grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Those who died earlier included his wife Edith; brothers Gus, Richard, Joseph and Julian, all of La Grande; sister Evona Yerkovich of Klamath Falls; and stepdaughter Mary Husband of Tualatin.

Earl Carpenter

Earl Sielaff Carpenter, 79, of Beaverton and formerly of La Grande, died Saturday in Beaverton.

A funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1802 Gekeler Lane. Viewing will begin one hour before the service, and burial will be at the Grandview Cemetery. A reception will follow at the church.

Mary Taylor Jacobs

Elgin

Mary Taylor Jacobs, 91, of Elgin and formerly of Council, Idaho, died Nov. 3 at her Elgin home.

A celebration of life service will begin at 1 p.m. (MST) Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 300 E. Main St., Weiser, Idaho. A viewing will be at the church between 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. that day. Committal and dedication of the grave will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Weiser.

Mrs. Jacobs was born Oct. 3, 1910, to Herbert and Jane Ann Gardner Taylor in Eureka, Utah. She attended Hennigers Business School.

She married John P. Jacobs Nov. 17, 1931, in Magna, Utah. The couple lived in Council, Idaho, between 1946 and 1977. They operated a cattle ranch.

In 1977, when John died, Mrs. Jacobs moved to Boise to be closer to her daughter. She later moved to Elgin.

While living in Council, Mrs. Jacobs worked in the county agents office for many years and taught business classes at the high school.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and Jim Ludwig of Elgin; her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Elvon Jacobs of Dicknell, Utah; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Annie and Ernie Klein of San Francisco.

L. Douglas Doug DeRoest, 52, of La Grande, died Thursday in Portland.

Mr. DeRoest, who owned Klondike Pizza, died of a lung ailment .

A service will start at 1 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2625 Hughes Lane in Baker City. Vault interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the Oregon Health and Science University Foundation through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City 97814.

Contributions will be used to conduct research on Mr. DeRoests fatal lung disease.

Walter Stein

Enterprise

Walter Stein, 83, a Wallowa County rancher, died Thursday at his home in Enterprise.

A service was conducted this morning at Bollman Funeral Home in Enterprise.

Mr. Stein was born in Enterprise on Nov. 21, 1917, to William and Bertha Stein. He worked the family ranch with his brother Herman all of his life, except for four years he spent during World War II at Fort Ord, Calif.

He sold all but a small parcel of the ranch in 1979. He lived on it with his wife, Penny, for the rest of his life. They were married Aug. 12, 1983, in Winnemuccca, Nev. Together they toured many locations in the United States including Alaska. They also visited parts of Mexico and Canada. His favorite trip was to Australia and New Zealand, where he enjoyed learning the ways and swapping stories with local ranchers and cowboys.

Survivors include his wife, Penny; sister, Agnes Wagner; son Bernie Stein; and daughter-in-law Mary Stein. He is also survived by three stepchildren: Danny Reed and his wife, Betty; Linda Sikes and her husband, Odis; Tom Collins; and Tim Collins and his wife, Jeannie. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A sister, Viola Reece; a brother, Herman Stein; and a son, Jerry Stein, died earlier.

Leon Douglass DeRoest, 52, of La Grande, died Nov. 1 at Oregon Health Science University after a short illness. A service will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2625 Hughes Lane in Baker City. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City.

Mr. DeRoest was born July 15, 1949, to Toye Loudeen White and Leon Philemon DeRoest in Baker City. He graduated from Baker High School in 1967, and in 1968, he married Jean Hall. He worked for Leo Adler Shipping and then for Grizzly Bear Pizza, where he worked his way up to a position on the board of directors. In 1983 he started Klondike Pizza.

He published many articles on the history of the Northwest, with an emphasis on postal history. He was instrumental in starting the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center and was also involved with protection of the Chinese Cemetery in Baker City.

He enjoyed restoring cars and won many awards with his 1966 Dodge Cornet 500 convertible. He collected old pictures of Eastern Oregon to have them restored, and he and his wife raised foster children.

Survivors include his wife, Jean of La Grande; children, Julia and Michael Marostica and Susan DeRoest, all of Ontario, Tamera and John Lannon of

La Grande, Michael DeRoest and Jim Hall, both of Baker City; six grandchildren; his mother and stepfather, Toye and Dee Spence of Baker City; a sister, Madeline Kahn of Fallon, Nev.; brothers, Ron DeRoest of Baker City, and Dorrell and Patrick Spence, and other relatives. His son, Rickie Allen, and his father died earlier.

Earl Carpenter

Earl Sielaff Carpenter, 79, formerly of La Grande, died Nov. 3 at Trexler Foster Home in Beaverton.

Mr. Carpenter was born June 4, 1922, in La Grande to Earl Harrison Carpenter and Ida Carpenter. He grew up in La Grande, graduated from La Grande High School and attended Eastern Oregon University.

He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. After he left the service, he worked as an inspection engineer. He was sealed in marriage to Nellie Gondzar on Jan. 1, 1975, in Boise. She died on Oct. 2, 1997.

Mr. Carpenter was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a past commander of Chapter 21 in La Grande and Chapter 7 in Oakland, Calif.

Jeffrey Frye

Island City

1960-2001

Jeffrey Scott Frye, 41, of Island City, died Nov. 3 at St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the National Guard Armory, 404 12th St. A graveside service will follow at Island City Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Frye was born Aug. 9, 1960, to Alfred O. Frye Sr. and Janice Cornett Frye in Toppenish, Wash. He married Janet Lemon, and after a divorce he married Brenda Kissack.

He worked as a sign coordinator for the Oregon Department of Transportation.

He raced cars and three-wheelers and was active in the La Grande Little League. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, steelhead fishing, camping with his children and riding Harley Davidsons. He had been a bone marrow donor for his brother Brian, who died in 1998.

Survivors include his wife of San Antonio, Texas; a son, Travis T.J. Frye, and a daughter, Jamie Frye, both of Island City; his mother of Outlook, Wash., his father and stepmother, Alfred and Deanna Frye of La Grande; his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Alfred Jr. and Laura Frye, and Brad and Marcia Frye, all of La Grande, Aaron and Lori Frye of Island City, Janice and Jimmy Curtiss of Vancouver, Wash., Teresa Michaels of Palmer, Alaska, and other relatives.

Gussie Bunten

La Grande

1909-2001

Augusta Gussie Bunten, 92, of La Grande, died Oct. 26 at a local care center. At her request, there will be no public service. Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery. Daniels Chapel of the Valley was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bunten was born Sept. 2, 1909, to Delmer and Mintie Neel McCoy in Lincoln, Mo. She attended school in La Grande, and in 1939 married Hugh Breen Bunten in Weiser, Idaho. She worked as a licensed practical nurse for many years and also worked for Falks ID, J.C. Penneys, Woolworths and as a cook and housekeeper for many people. She was a member of the La Grande Gun Club and the Eagles Lodge. She enjoyed trap shooting.

Survivors include her niece and guardians, Beverly and Frank Beckner of East Wenatchee, Wash.; her brothers, Ralph McCoy of La Grande and Ellis McCoy of Klamath Falls; and other relatives. Her husband, a brother, Fred McCoy and a sister, Fern Campbell, all died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Childrens Hospital in care of Daniels Chapel.

Clora Orton

Formerly of Union

1908-2001

Clora L. Orton, 92, of Spanish Fork, Utah, and formerly of Union, died Nov. 6 at a care center. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel in Union.

Viewing will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. Burial will follow at the Union Cemetery. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Orton was born Nov. 28, 1908, to Joseph Coleman and Katie Rosilla Deuel Lay in Union. She married Alva Warren Orton on April 5, 1933, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. The couple lived in Union, Star, Idaho; Sheridan, Mont.; Warden, Wash.; Pendleton; Fruitland, Idaho; and Payette, Idaho.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served a mission in the southern states before her marriage and served with her husband in Tulsa, Okla., after their retirement. The couple also served for 10 years as workers in the Boise LDS Temple.

She found great joy in providing service to family, friends and neighbors.

Survivors include their children and their spouses, Ferrin and Peggy Orton, Joel and Carmen Orton and Nical and Alejandra Orton, all of Provo, Utah; Verlin and Barbara Orton of Aloha; Mark and Annette Orton of Sausalito, Calif; Wayne and Janie Orton of La Grande; Lyle and Jamee Orton of Firth, Idaho; Rosala and Don Jensen of Aberdeen, Wash.; Wanda and Alan Wilhelmsen of Mapleton, Utah, Cloras caregivers for the last five years; Marcel and Susan Orton of Salem, Utah, and their adopted son, Steven and Vania Helmer of Gresham, 68 grandchildren, 105 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Her husband died earlier.

Dortha Day

Dortha Day, 86, of Redmond and formerly of La Grande, died Thursday in Redmond. Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Danny Williams

A memorial service for Danny Williams, 62, of Joseph, will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patricks Episcopal Church in Enterprise.

Buzz Bartron

Formerly of La Grande

1920-2001

Harold Wayne Buzz Bartron, 81, of Pendleton and formerly of La Grande, died Oct. 30 at St. Anthony Hospital. The funeral was on Nov. 3 at the Free Methodist Church in Pendleton, and burial was at Skyview Memorial Park.

Mr. Bartron was born May 11, 1920, to Hubert and Georgia Fuller Bartron in Castle Rock, Wash. He grew up in the Sherman County area and graduated from Wasco High School. He served in the Army during World War II, and on June 9, 1945, he married Frances Emigh, a teacher at Wasco High School. He graduated from Eastern Oregon State College in 1955 and in 1959 earned a masters degree in education. He taught at Island City, Imbler and La Grande. He graduated from the University of Oregon with a masters degree in speech pathology in 1965.

From Eugene the family moved to Pendleton, where he worked for the Education Service District as a speech therapist.

He was involved with the Meadowwood Springs Speech Camp, including participation on the board, and worked in area schools for 13 years.

He was a founding member of the Faith Center Church and was a member of the Pendleton Retired Teachers. He enjoyed lunching with his friends at the senior

center and working with kids.

Survivors include a son, John Bartron of Pendleton; daughters, Linda Butler and Sue Reents, both of Boise; seven grandchildren; and a brother, Bart Bartron of Carmel, Calif. His wife and a brother, Bob, died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Meadowwood Springs Speech Camp in care of Burns Mortuary.
