Linda Beeson

La Grande

1943-2002

Linda Ann Beeson, 59, of La Grande died Dec. 13 at her home following a long illness. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., with Sally Wiens officiating. Burial will follow at the Island City Cemetery. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Mrs. Beeson was born Dec. 10, 1943, to Leman Allen and Mary Alice Porter Goodwin in La Grande. She spent the first 10 years of her life at the logging camp at Starkey before the family moved to La Grande. She graduated from La Grande High School in 1962, and on Dec. 22, 1963, she married Thomas F. Beeson in La Grande. He was in the Navy and the couple made their home in various communities before returning to La Grande in July 1989 from Chula Vista, Calif.

She was a member of the Beta Theta Sorority and participated in her children’s activities despite her illness. She enjoyed crafts and cards of all kinds, including bridge and pinochle.

Survivors include her husband of La Grande, children, Steven Beeson of New York, N.Y., Brian Beeson and Susan Herbster, both of Chula Vista, and and Bradley Beeson of La Grande, six grandchildren, a sister, Norma Flanagan of La Grande, a brother, Dennis Goodwin of Condon, a step-brother, Dan Brown of La Grande, and other relatives.

Lulu Counsell

La Grande

1912-2002

Lulu Belle Counsell, 89, of La Grande died Dec. 12 at a local care center. At her request there will be no public service. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Counsell was born Feb. 28, 1912, to Frank and Edith Furgason McClure at Ladd Canyon. She attended schools in La Grande and on Sept. 23, 1930, she married Harley Counsell in Boise. The couple ranched for years in the Ladd Canyon area and later moved to La Grande where they bought and managed the Caroline Apartments for 10 years. Her husband died in 1966. Later in life she went back to school to became an X-ray technician and worked at St. Joseph Hospital. She enjoyed fishing and watching wildlife.

Survivors include three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, two sisters, Gertrude Mason of Union and Margaret Chandler of La Grande, a brother, Francis McClure of Forest Grove and other relatives. A son, Eugene Counsell died in 1990. Two sisters and a brother also died earlier.

Marvin Jones

La Grande

1915-2002

Marvin L. Jones, 87, of La Grande and formerly of Rialto, Calif., died Dec. 14 at a La Grande adult care home.

A funeral service will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Loveland Funeral Chapel. Burial will be later in Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, Calif. Friends may visit from 1 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Jones was born Sept. 21, 1915, at Mauch Chunk, Pa., to Thomas L. and Annie S. Steidle Jones. He graduated from high school in Pennsylvania in 1932. He was a major in the Army during World War II, serving in the Solomon Islands and the Philippines.

After his discharge, he married Janet E. Forker on April 23, 1947, at Mauch Chunk. They moved to Rialto, where he earned a master’s degree and worked as a mathematician for NASA at Norton Air Base in San Bernardino, Calif. He moved to La Grande in 1996.

He enjoyed deer hunting and will be remembered as someone who could fix anything. He enjoyed playing the stock market, and enjoyed working crossword puzzles, playing and watching baseball, basketball and football.

He was a 32nd degree Mason and was an active member of the Episcopal Church in Rialto.

He is survived by four children, Elizabeth Rorabaugh of Battle Ground, Wash., Janet E. Moyer of McBride, B.C., Donald Jones of Dana Point, Calif., and Margaret "Meg" Fiorito of Union; a brother, Wilmer Jones of Florida; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

His wife died earlier, as did six brothers and a sister.

Clella Jamieson

La Grande

1914-2002

Clella Marie Cornell Jamieson, 88, of La Grande died Dec. 14. Burial will be at the Nyssa Cemetery. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jamieson was born Dec. 11, 1914, to Rufus and Mary Cornell in Big Pine, Calif. She married Albert A. Jamieson there on April 21, 1933. The couple moved to Nyssa in 1935 and in 1973 to Portland, where she worked for the Farmers Home Administration. She retired in 1978 after 26 years. She was a member of the Oregon Trail Grange and the Owyhee Riding Club in Nyssa.

Survivors include children, Stan Jamieson of La Puente, Calif., Jim Jamieson of Kennewick, Wash., Phyllis Morris of Summerville and Marlene Jamieson of Newberg, 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Her husband (1976), a daughter, Loraine Morris (1988), two brothers, three sisters and two grandchildren all died earlier.

Tyler Cuthbert

La Grande

1992-2002

Tyler Matthew Cuthbert, 10, of La Grande, died Dec. 14 in the care of his cousins, Randy and Wendy Jenkins in La Grande.

Tyler died of natural causes related to a long-term genetic disorder, Hunter’s Syndrome.

A celebration of life service was conducted Tuesday at the Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Brett R. Clapp officiating.

Tyler was born April 3, 1992, in La Grande. He enjoyed many activities such as watching movies, sports, wrestling his cousins and sister, school and most of all being with his family. Although his life was short, he brought a lifetime of joy and happiness to everyone who had the opportunity to meet him, family members said.

Survivors include Tyler’s parents, Jeff Cuthbert of Cove and Roxanne Hoyt; sisters, Amanda and Gabrielle Cuthbert; grandparents, Violet Hoyt, Donald and Kris Hoyt, and Jack and Bev Baker; great-grandmothers, Jean Cuthbert and Maria O’Neil; and many other cousins, aunts and uncles.

His great-grandfather, Don O’Neil, and a cousin, Brian Brown, died earlier.

Anna Allen

La Grande

and formerly of Elgin

1910-2002

Anna Josephine Cason Allen, 92, of La Grande and formerly of Elgin died Dec. 14 at a local care center. The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Elgin Cemetery with Pastor John McElravy of the Elgin Christian Church officiating. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Allen was born May 2, 1910, to Lloyd and Josephine Cason in St. Joseph, Mo. She graduated from Elgin High School and on July 18, 1962, married Lenn D. Allen in Boise. After her husband’s honorable discharge from active military duty, the couple settled in Elgin where first Lenn and then Anna served as postmaster of the Elgin Post Office. She retired in 1972.

Survivors include her nephews, Wayne Boswell and Richard, Dallas and Darrell Cason. Her husband, a sister, Loretta, and a brother, Paul, all died earlier.

Sarah Thompson

Formerly of La Grande

Sarah B. Thompson, 83, of Brier, Wash., and formerly of La Grande, died Dec. 14 at her son’s home. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. Burial will follow at Hillcrest East Cemetery. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel.

Mrs. Thompson was born Oct. 9, 1919, to Raymond and Anna Gritsmacher Viergutz in Wausau, Wis. She lived in La Grande for many years until the death of her husband, Earl "Butch" Thompson, when she moved to Brier to live with her son.

Survivors include children, Janet Bush of Hermiston, David Viergutz of Antelope, Calif., Larry Thompson of Portland and Ronald Thompson of Brier, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Grace Halliday of La Grande and Mabel Griesen of Wausau, Wis.; brothers, Lester and Glenn Viergutz of Wausau.

Her husband, three brothers, Harold, Wallace and Dale Viergutz and a granddaughter, Cheryl Rayburn, all died earlier.

Lavon Isaacson

La Grande

Lavon Isaacson, 84, of La Grande died Dec. 14 at the home of her daughter in La Grande. A funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at the LDS Church on Grape Drive in Moses Lake, Wash. Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. before the service. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Isaacson was born on April 3, 1918, to George A. and Sarah E. Gibson Heslop in West Weber, Utah. She attended school there and on Aug. 6, 1941, she married Charles Orton Isaacson in Logan, Utah. In 1952 the family moved to Moses Lake, Wash., as the Columbia Basin was receiving its first irrigation water. In 1995 she moved to La Grande to be near family. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was active in the Block 40 community. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, canning and baking bread.

Survivors include children, Elaine Starks of Issaquah, Wash., Arlene Stebbins of Whidbey Island, Wash., Dale Isaacson of Dalton Gardens, Idaho, Fay Lewis of Westminster, Calif., Carma Bedard of La Grande, and Val Isaacson of Electric City, Wash.; 21 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clifford and Carl Heslop, and a sister, Mary Bell Farr. Her husband, a daughter, Verla, three sisters and a brother all died earlier.

Karen Gewecke

Union and formerly

of La Grande

1945-2002

Karen Elizabeth Gewecke, 57, of Union and formerly of La Grande, died Dec. 15 at her home. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. A private burial will be at Grandview Cemetery.

Mrs. Gewecke was born March 2, 1945, to George William and Garnet Gertrude Vollrath Schafer in North Bend. She attended schools in Coos Bay and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1963. On Dec. 24, 1976, she married Ronald Gewecke in Belflower, Calif. The couple moved to La Grande shortly after their marriage and owned and operated The Trophy Case until illness forced her retirement. She was a member of the La Grande-Union County Chamber of Commerce and the Corvette Club, and received a special award from the Chamber for her dedication to the community. She enjoyed gardening and decorated her business for every holiday.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Higgins of La Grande, two grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Her husband died in 1996.

Lucy Dimmick

La Grande

Lucy A. Dimmick, 96, of La Grande and formerly of Baker City died Dec. 16 at a local care center. A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery with Pastor Art Evans of the New Life Center officiating.

Mrs. Dimmick was born Oct. 16, 1906, in Linsley, Okla., to Albert J. and Jennie E. Coates Warner. In September 1935, she married Willard R. Reeves in Fay, Okla. After a divorce she married James E. Dimmick, an evangelist minister, in 1958 at Raton, N. M., and the couple settled in Baker City shortly afterwards. She loved children and made beautiful quilts.

Survivors include special friends, Terri Folsom of Coos Bay and Art Evans of La Grande. Her husband, son and family all died earlier.

Bob Taylor

Baker City

1929-2002

Bob Taylor, 73, of Baker City, died Dec. 12 at his home. Coles Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. No service is planned.

Mr. Taylor was born June 16, 1929, to David Taylor and Mary Ellen Ramsey Taylor Huckins at Walla Walla. He lived in many places as a boy and enlisted in the Air Force when he was 17 years of age, working at the Pentagon most of his service time. He graduated from barber college and had barber shops in Coos Bay, Roseburg, Union and Baker City, Melba, Idaho, and Pasco, Wash. He also worked as a truck driver and was an excellent cook.

He enjoyed music and at one time has his own band.

He married Mary J. Bodewig on March 26, 1984, in Weiser, Idaho. He was a member of the American Legion, Amvets and Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife of Baker City; children, Lori Gilbert of La Grande, Patti Taylor of California, Rob Reese of Union, Micki Reese of Nebraska, Jimmy David Taylor of Virginia, Barb Hellman and Larry Parlin, both of Oregon, Donna Saunders of Pennsylvania and Debi Parlin of Idaho; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Ken Taylor Sr. and a sister, Mary Orazine, all of Baker City; and other relatives.

Joyce Smith

Formerly of La Grande

Joyce Smith, 71, of Boise and formerly of La Grande died Dec. 14 at her second home in Kona, Hawaii. A vigil service will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, 5400 Fairview Ave., in Boise. A funeral mass will begin at noon Saturday at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Boise. Burial will follow at Terrace Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 8, 1931, to Lester and Margaret Stanley Toller in Pocatello, Idaho. She attended schools in Pocatello and was serving as an aide at St. Anthony Hospital when she married Bill Smith on Feb. 20, 1949. The family lived in La Grande from 1960 to 1970 before moving to Boise. She was a homemaker and enjoyed playing golf, reading, growing flowers and spending time in Hawaii. She was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband of Boise, children and their spouses, Linda and Mike Shields of Canby, Joyce and Jim Ritter of Gresham, and Billie Renk of Boise; her sisters and their spouses, Carol and Bob Simons of Pocatello and Louise and Joe Garcia of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and several grandchildren.

Robert Kausler

Union

1940-2002

Robert Thomas Kausler, 62, of Union died Dec. 20 at his home.

A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at the Union Cemetery with Pastor Bill Miller officiating.

Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to noon at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St.

Mr. Kausler was born May 9, 1940, to Robert and Agnes Kausler in Pittsburgh. After graduating from high school, he served in the Army as a paratrooper and as a military police officer in Panama. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, and in June of 1962 he married Barbara Daroszewski in Los Angeles. The couple moved to

La Grande in 1970, and the marriage ended in divorce in 1975. He worked as a carpenter for various contractors. He enjoyed the outdoors, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Robert and Cherie Kausler, and Yvonne and Jesse Roberts, all of Union, Denise and Lonnie Ferguson of North Bend, Wash., Tanya and Roy Baremore of La Grande, William and Melissa Kausler of Tigard, and Hilary and Jack Fiedler of Redondo Beach, Calif., 10 grandchildren, his brothers, William Kausler of Carson City, Nev., and Dan Kausler of Pittsburgh, a sister, Kathy Lopata of Pittsburgh, and other relatives.
