Local dancers win awards in Pendleton, Boise shows

Kylin Collman was overall division winner for Lost in Paradise during the Spotlight regional competition in Boise April 20-21. Patricia Sandlin won the overall choreography award for the same dance.

Dance Arts Inc. has had a busy competition and performance season.

The La Grande dance studio, owned and directed by Patricia Sandlin, traveled to two competitions recently.

Dance Arts traveled to Pendleton in February and competed in Hearts in Motion. Dance Arts brought home a first place trophy for the high school-age team, a second place for the junior high team and a second place for the elementary group.

The junior high team also received a judges choice award for Starstruck.

Dance Arts traveled to Boise also, competing in Spotlight, a regional competition judge by professionals in the field of dance. The studio completed 20 routines over the two-day event.

Sandlin said she was thrilled with all the teams successes.

“They have totally earned it,” she said. “They have worked hard and remained dedicated to the process of excellence.”

The studio tentatively plans on attending nationals in Seaside again this summer. Last year they won overall highest honors, and Sandlin received a national choreographers award.

To see the studio perform these pieces, check out its annual recital, Reaching Beyond, May 25 at McKenzie Theatre on the EOU campus. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the show begins at 6. Tickets are $8.
