LA GRANDE — Union County residents are being asked to check their mail closely.

Flyers with a survey from the Northeast Oregon Economic Development District are now arriving in mailboxes throughout Union County. The message on the flyers requests people to fill out a survey about their broadband service by going to www.fasterinternetoregon.com or scanning a QR code shown on the flyer.

The survey asks residents whether they have internet service, and if they do, how fast it is and what they pay for it. The headline on the front of the flyer reads Bring Faster & Affordable Internet to Your Community.

Union County Commissioner Matt Scarfo said it is critical that people fill out the survey because it will help determine how much money that Oregon may receive from the federal government — to pay for improved broadband service and to reduce its expense — may go to Union County.

Scarfo said he is worried that people will think the flyer is advertising and will toss it without looking at it.

“It looks like junk mail but it is not,” he said.
