Police are asking community members to be aware of a roadside scam popping up around La Grande where the scammers offer seemingly valuable items in exchange for money or assistance.

LA GRANDE — Police are warning community members to be vigilant about a nationwide roadside scam that has started appearing locally.

The department has taken reports of these scams happening around La Grande, according to a June 13 press release. Lt. Jason Hays said the scammers exploit the kindness of others by offering seemingly valuable items in exchange for help or money.

“We urge all community members to be cautious when approached by strangers asking for money or offering goods in exchange for assistance,” Hays wrote.

One such incident happened on Wednesday, June 12, at the Mobil gas station on the west end of Adams Avenue, according to the press release. The suspect approached a patron and asked for gas money. He offered what appeared to be a valuable watch in exchange for the money.

The suspect was described to police as being of Arab descent. He reportedly claimed to be from Dubai.

The watch turned out to be fake costume jewelry and the patron realized they had been scammed.

Roadside scammers may also try to flag down drivers on the side of the highway or on ramps to ask for gas money, according to the press release. The driver may be in a nice rental car and be well dressed.

If approached, police recommend you say “No thank you” and walk away.

“Raising awareness about scams is crucial for protecting our community,” Hays wrote. “If you encounter a similar situation, please report it to the authorities immediately.”
