High school volleyball: Local teams begin push toward state title

NORTH POWDER — A trio of local volleyball teams start the journey towards a possible 1A state title with first round action on Wednesday, Oct. 25, kicking off the round of 32 teams in action around the state.

Powder Valley opens the tournament as home, hosting Triangle Lake starting at 6 p.m. The Badgers received the second seed in the tournament after playing to a 26-4 overall record and a 1A Old Oregon League tournament title. The Lakers picked up the 31st seed after finishing the season 13-5 overall. Winning its final three matches of the year, Triangle Lake managed a third-place showing in the 1A Mountain West League.

Seeded 15th in the tournament, Imbler are also playing host in the first round of action. Beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Panther gym, Imbler hosts 18th-seeded Myrtle Point. The Panthers wrapped up their season with an 18-14 overall record, finishing third in the league standings. Myrtle Points makes the trip to Imbler from the 1A Skyline League where the Bobcats are the fourth team making the state tournament from league, finishing the year with a 15-5 overall record.

Fans of Union volleyball will need to make a drive as the Bobcats take to the road for the first round of action, traveling to Ione starting at 6 p.m.

After placing fourth at the 1A Old Oregon League tournament, Union fell to a 22nd seeding for the state tournament, while the Cardinals come in at 11th in the rankings. The Bobcats look to rebound from a tough showing at the league tournament, going 0-2. Ione/Arlington grabbed the league title in the 1A Big Sky League and is on a seven-game win streak.
