Crucial free throws cost Union

UNION – Some games are black and white. Union lost to Pilot Rock Friday for one reason – free throw shooting.

The Bobcats boys basketball team shot 13 of 24 from the line during a 64-58 loss.
Lane Byrnes of Pilot Rock shot 15 of 18 from the line, and the Rockets shot 20 of 29 as a team.
“We’ve got to make those shots,” Union head coach Brett Dunten said.

“It’s tough when the difference in the game is so small. The boys need to come out stronger in the first quarter.”
The Bobcats trailed by seven points after the first quarter, but cut the lead to 27-23 at the half.
Union reached the bonus in the third quarter with 2:38 left. The Bobcats made 1 of 5 free throws, while the Rockets were 7 of 8 until Pilot Rock also reached the bonus.
Byrnes finished with a game-high 23 points.
Austin Woodward led the Bobcats with 21 points.
Ritter Warren also reached double figures with 18 points.
The Bobcats bounced back with a 61-33 win against Irrigon Saturday.
Cody Fouts hit 5 of 6 3-point attempts in the game, including all four in the opening quarter. He finished with 15 points.
Tyler Griffiths added 14 points.
Woodward finished with a team-high 18 rebounds.
Jacob Montgomery only played for one quarter but grabbed seven
rebounds and scored four points.
Union will host Enterprise at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

ELGIN – The Elgin boys basketball team struggled over the weekend.
The Huskies fell to Stanfield 80-35 Friday.
Stanfield led by 17 points after three quarters, and exploded with 33 points in the the fourth quarter.
Dalton Moore and Efrain Nieves each scored eight points to lead the Huskies.
Elgin played better Saturday, but lost to Heppner 72-61.
A strong opening quarter led the Mustangs, taking a 20-13 lead.
Robin Stone scored a team-high 18 points.
Tanner Hallgarth finished with 17 points.
Kyler Miller added 12 points.
The Huskies will travel to Weston-McEwen Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game.
