UNION The Union girls need to repeat their strong defensive effort against Nyssa Saturday in their two remaining Wapiti League basketball games this weekend to possibly squeak into the No. 4 district slot.

The Bobcats (9-11 overall, 5-7 league) were up 25-3 at the half and cruised to a 45-25 win. Nyssa scored one point in the first quarter and two points in the second.
Kallin Prince took top scoring honors with 13 points for the Bobcats. Jana Brotherton had nine points and 12 rebounds. April Savely had six points and 10 rebounds. Lena Weitlauf had three points and three steals.
The Bobcats travel to Halfway to take on Pine-Eagle Friday and host Joseph Saturday.

Wallowa girls bury Mustangs in fourth
WALLOWA The Wallowa High School basketball girls took second place in the Old Oregon League all for themselves, thanks to some smothering fourth-quarter defense.
The Cougar girls (16-5 overall, 10-2 in OOL) won 43-39 over Jordan Valley.
The Wallowa girls needed the win to lock up the No. 2 seed out of the OOL and to keep Powder Valley at bay. Wallowa begins play at district in Baker City on Wednesday.

Powder Valley girls regroup in win
NORTH POWDER The Powder Valley basketball girls got off to a terrible start against Crane but regrouped in a big second quarter to beat the Mustangs 54-44.
The Powder Valley girls end their Old Oregon League season with a 9-3 record (16-5 overall).
The Badger girls begin district playoffs Wednesday.

Grant Union girls pull away in fourth
JOHN DAY The Grant Union girls remained first in the Wapiti League with a 50-30 win over Enterprise Saturday.
The Prospectors held a 28-21 lead at the end of the third before pulling away in the fourth.
Enterprise (6-6, 7-13) is a game ahead of Union for the fourth district spot. The girls host Imbler Friday and Nyssa Saturday.

The Eagles (5-13 overall, 4-8 league) were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.
